Hello darlings! Emma here, back from another fabulous journey through time in my magical pink tutu! August the 8th, 1934 was absolutely divine, and, darling, it took me to Paris, the City of Lights! Can you believe it? Paris!
As you all know, my mission in life is to spread the pink tutu gospel across the ages, encouraging everyone, from cave women to futuristic space babes, to embrace the ultimate symbol of feminine power. And what better place to do it than the birthplace of haute couture and glamour: Paris!
I popped into 1934 in my tutu, feeling as fierce as a flamingo, and landed right outside the famous Moulin Rouge. Honestly, it was like stepping into a scene from a classic French film. Imagine cobblestone streets, twinkling café lights, and a heady mix of perfume, cigarette smoke, and laughter – it was intoxicating!
And, my darlings, the Moulin Rouge! It’s everything you've heard and more. We’re talking feathers, sequins, towering headdresses, and legs for days. You just had to take a deep breath and take it all in. It was sheer cabaret extravagance!
The performers were amazing! It was all high kicks, sassy shimmying, and elaborate costumes that made my heart flutter like a hummingbird. There were showgirls with feathers and silk, tap dancers, acrobats…and, of course, some sensational drag performers, dripping in glam! One queen was wearing a beaded dress that shimmered like a thousand stars, another had a sequined gown so tight it could barely contain her sass. And then there was this absolutely breathtaking cabaret performer named "Lili" – she wore this flowing, scarlet dress, topped off with a towering feather boa, and she had the audience mesmerised.
The show was a mix of dance numbers, acrobatic feats, and naughty cabaret skits that had everyone howling with laughter. One particular routine involving a chorus of women with gigantic fake cherries on their costumes – a real fruit-fest!
But honestly, my dears, I was captivated by the drag queens in the audience! Imagine this - the air was buzzing with excitement and all eyes were on the queens! Their outfits were beyond fabulous - there was a dapper chap in a velvet smoking jacket with a glittering brooch, a glamorous dame with an art-deco feather boa, and a sassy queen in a vibrant sequined dress – and, darling, did they have a good time! It was clear they were as passionate about drag as I am!
After the show, I snagged a spot at the Moulin Rouge’s cabaret bar, where the drinks flowed and the music kept on going. It was such a joyful and free space.
After that glorious night, I decided to spend some time exploring Paris' other drag scene. You know me - I had to discover everything about drag in 1934! I discovered there was quite a thriving underground scene of drag performances and parties hidden in secret underground bars. It was almost impossible to tell if someone was performing drag or just going about their daily business! I saw everything from extravagant ball gowns and sparkling show costumes to simple, but wonderfully androgynous styles – it was a kaleidoscope of Parisian chic!
Oh, and darling, the fashion! Paris has always been known for its exquisite fashion, and 1934 was no different! Think sleek flapper dresses with daring slits, bold hats with dramatic veils, and heels that would make a high-heeled queen tremble. It was pure magic! I got to see the fashion houses in their full glory and, of course, tried on as many dresses as I could – a true pink-tutu connoisseur knows when she finds something fabulous.
Paris was such a whirlwind, it left me speechless. It really did take my breath away. You see, the magic of the 1930s is undeniable!
Now, for my next mission: to find the ultimate vintage pink tutu – you know I can't just go on time travel without finding an amazing pink tutu to add to my collection! I know my dear readers are on the lookout for it, so stay tuned to this space!
In the meantime, get your glitter, find your inner femme fatale, and be fierce – remember, life is a stage, and a pink tutu makes it infinitely more glamorous. Until next month, my darlings!
xx Emma
