Pink-Tutu.com Presents: Blog Post 177 - Backstage in 1934! 🩰✨

Hello darlings! It’s Emma here, your resident pink tutu enthusiast and time-travelling drag queen! September the 9th is upon us, which means it’s time to take a whirl in my magical pink tutu and venture into the past! This month, I'm headed to a date that's sure to be a total fashion feast: September 9th, 1934.

Oh my darlings, where do I even begin? 1934 was a time of incredible glamour! Think Art Deco, feathers, fabulous hats, and, of course, a dash of rebellious energy. But let’s get back to the topic at hand – the drag scene! I'm picturing glittering drag shows, secret underground speakeasies and a truly wild scene bursting with creative energy. Now, let’s delve into the pink-tutu archives!

Backstage with the Stars

Did you know, dear readers, that even back then, the world of drag was buzzing with iconic figures? One name that stands out like a sequined jewel is Miss Kiki de Lux, an absolutely fabulous drag performer who reigned supreme at The Kit Kat Club in New York. Kiki was known for her larger-than-life performances, complete with stunning costumes that left everyone speechless. Think showgirl elegance mixed with a touch of burlesque! Can’t you just picture it – dazzling feather boas, daring hemlines, and the most captivating, theatrical make-up you’ve ever seen? It was the era of Hollywood glamour mixed with a dash of daring edge!

But the excitement wasn’t limited to the U.S.! Over in Britain, London was bustling with secret, underground drag performances. This era saw the rise of some truly extraordinary entertainers, often referred to as "entertainers in female dress". There were incredible female impersonators with beautiful voices, often performing in music halls and pubs. Think cabaret-style performances filled with a sensation of glam and a touch of mischief.

It was a time when these artists had to thrive in secrecy. Their work was considered somewhat scandalous, and it was often hush-hush, but you can be sure the energy in those speakeasies was electric! It was about the freedom of self-expression, pushing boundaries, and creating art in a world that was trying to confine them.

I think the stars of that era, even under these circumstances, had such courage. Just imagine! Performing under the weight of potential judgement but still managing to dazzle your audience! I think they were absolute pioneers! Their talents are so inspiring and should be recognised for paving the way for drag artists all around the world.

Finding the Sparkle

One thing I adore about drag history is that it's so diverse. It's not a one-size-fits-all scenario! Drag back in 1934 was about individuality, creativity, and celebrating those individual unique personas. The shows were incredibly intimate, filled with sparkle and a touch of mischievousness. These artists embraced fashion, storytelling, and pure entertainment!

You could find these performances everywhere from secret bars to extravagant stage productions. Some of them had beautiful voices and captivated audiences with their incredible vocals, while others embodied a glamorous persona through elaborate costumes and make-up.

My Pink-Tutu Wish: Let's Go Pink, Baby!

Okay darlings, it’s time for a little pink-tutu chat. What do I see in the future for you all? My biggest dream is a world filled with dazzling pink tutus, from the catwalks of Milan to the stages of the most extravagant drag shows. Pink is about being bold, expressive, and positively radiant!

Imagine a world where every show had at least one fabulous pink-tutu performance – a stunning ballet number, an exciting high-energy number, or a comedic whirl of glittery madness. This dream, darlings, is reachable and it starts with each one of us embracing that beautiful, pink energy!

And with a flourish and a sprinkle of glitter, I say goodbye for now, my dearest readers. Until next month, don’t forget to stay glamorous, stay creative, and most importantly, stay fabulous!

Xoxo,

Emma 💖
