Pink-Tutu.com - Blog Post #224: August 8th, 1938 - A Night at the Cotton Club, Darling!

Hello, darlings! Emma here, your fabulous time-travelling blogger, and let me tell you, it's been one helluva journey. I'm here today with another exciting tale from the annals of drag history, a time when glamour reigned supreme, and a pink tutu was never out of place.

This month, my sparkly pink tutu took me back to August 8th, 1938, the very heart of Harlem, New York City, to a night at the legendary Cotton Club. Now, darling, if you're thinking I found myself backstage at a show with Josephine Baker or the Nicholas Brothers (oh how I wish!), you're absolutely right!

Before I tell you all about the fabulous show, let me paint a picture of my arrival. I materialised on the sidewalk outside the Cotton Club in my signature pink tutu, complete with sparkly diamanté details and feathers. To say I caused a stir is an understatement!

Harlem in 1938 was a place teeming with vibrant culture and artistic expression. Everyone I encountered, from the doormen in their smart suits to the sassy flapper ladies in their sparkling dresses, oozed a unique charm. I felt the buzz in the air, the excitement, the sense of community. There was nothing quite like it.

The Cotton Club was truly the place to be. From its lavish interior decorated in plush velvet and gold accents to the dazzling array of showgirls on stage, it felt like a different world altogether. I waltzed through the opulent ballroom, catching the eyes of dapper men and elegant ladies, all captivated by my twirling pink tutu.

And then, the moment we were all waiting for – the show! I can’t describe the pure energy radiating from the stage. The dancers moved like sin, their moves sharp and sensual. The singing was intoxicating. It was a night of joyous music, glittering costumes, and truly captivating performances. The whole experience was a spectacle of pure extravagance, showcasing the raw talent and artistic spirit of the time.

You know me, darling. I just couldn't resist getting my own chance on the dance floor. My pink tutu made quite the entrance as I glided through the crowd. You’d have thought the music itself was composed for my graceful moves.

Now, darling, I've got to tell you about the fashion! The 1930s were a time when elegance was key. Women in the audience were dressed to impress, wearing stylish gowns, feather boas, and glamorous headbands. I even spotted some gentlemen rocking feather boas themselves - truly fabulous!

Speaking of fashion, I spent hours browsing the bustling boutiques of Harlem after the show. I found myself drawn to vibrant colors and intricate embellishments, reflecting the joyful energy of the community. You'll have to wait for my next blog post to see my fabulous new purchases!

While this particular trip brought me back to an exciting time in drag history, don’t forget that history is alive and vibrant today, too. Don’t just wait for my monthly time travels – get out there and embrace the beauty of your own history, the heritage of the people who came before, and discover how their passion has made the drag scene what it is today. And for heaven's sake, while you're at it, have a good old-fashioned dance, too.

Now, go on then, darling. You know the drill – share this post with all your drag loving friends, tag me in your fabulous looks, and tell me where my next pink tutu escapade should take me! Until next month, remember, keep your heads high, your skirts twirling, and stay fabulous!

Xoxo,

Emma
