Hiya darlings! It's your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, back with another juicy installment of Pink Tutu Time Travels from www.pink-tutu.com!
This month, we're jet-setting back to September 9th, 1938. Now, hold your feather boas, this date is bursting with historical glamour! Not only were we nearing the brink of World War II, but the world of drag was positively blooming. Let's sashay into the past and uncover what the dazzling divas were up to!
"Tut-tastic" Travel to 1938:
As always, I squeezed into my magical time-travelling pink tutu. It's not just a fashion statement, darlings, it's my very own time-warp machine! With a twirl and a flick of my pink feather boa, I landed in 1938 London. Oh, the excitement!
London was buzzing with excitement. There was the Theatre Royal Drury Lane putting on "The Dancing Years", a gorgeous musical packed with fabulous dance numbers. The sheer spectacle must have been utterly divine, and the costuming? Well, just imagine all the feather boas and sequinned gowns they must have been sporting!
The World of Drag:
Speaking of spectacle, drag was a force to be reckoned with! The "gay subculture", as they called it back then, was flourishing, especially in London and New York. We weren't talking the high-flying extravaganzas of today's drag superstars (although imagine a Judy Garland drag queen! Heavenly!), but they were still rocking those smokey eyes, flaunting feathers, and letting their inner fabulousness shine.
Just a stone's throw from my arrival point, in a smoky backroom of a pub, I stumbled upon a hidden cabaret performance by the legendary "Miss Lily"! Oh, the glamour, darlings! Imagine, all those incredible women gathered together, celebrating their own unique identities, sharing stories and songs under the glow of dimmed stage lights. It was a glimpse into a vibrant, hidden world.
A World of Pink
As I continued my travels, I encountered all sorts of colourful characters and stunning scenes. There was the London Fashion Week, bursting with stylish elegance. I absolutely fell in love with a black evening gown with silver detailing. I even managed to sneak a peek into the exclusive salons, filled with glamorous patrons trying out the latest "lip" and "eyes" styles. I even managed to get my own glamorous portrait in a* vintage photo booth, rocking a pearl-encrusted headband* to complete the look.
My time travelling has made me realise that, just like our own time, the 1930s had a fierce sense of style and a passion for creating beauty. We might not be rocking those vintage flapper dresses and daring makeup looks all the time, but those ladies were paving the way for us drag divas to become the bold, fearless queens we are today!
From The Stage To Your Closet:
Just as these fabulous pioneers found their strength in unity and expressing their individual styles, so should we. You've seen my obsession with tutus โ I truly believe that every soul can find their own "tutu" to embrace! Whether it's a pair of rainbow socks or a vintage brooch, wear it with pride, darlings! Show your individuality, celebrate your unique flavour, and don't be afraid to put your fabulousness on full display.
I may be back in my own time, but 1938 London will always hold a special place in my pink-tutu heart. It was a reminder that even when the world is tumultuous, there is always space for beauty, artistry, and, above all, glamour!
Now, darling, time to twirl into the weekend and spread the pink tutu magic.
Catch you next month for another fab trip in Pink Tutu Time Travels!
