Post #306: A Whirlwind Trip to June 6th, 1945: The Tutu Travels Through Time!

Hiya darlings, and welcome to the latest instalment of The Pink Tutu’s time travelling adventures! This month, I’m taking us all on a whirl-a-whirl to a particularly iconic date, 6th June 1945! Let's get those sparkly pink feathers shimmering and shimmy ourselves back in time!

You see, 6th June, 1945 was a rather momentous day, don't you know? The day that the Allied forces began their long-awaited invasion of Normandy, which of course led to the end of the Second World War. It was a momentous day for the entire world, filled with a cocktail of nervous excitement and hope.

Now, as a history-loving, pink tutu-clad drag queen, how could I not use my time-travelling tutu to journey to a time such as this?! The call of the past, you see, the call of all things fabulous and iconic... I just had to know what kind of glitz and glamour the drag scene was sporting during this historic time!

First of all, can we talk about fashion, darlings? Oh my, the ladies were really wearing their war effort chic to the max, those darling things! Seriously, the way they crafted beauty out of rations and austerity is truly something to admire. So much emphasis on the feminine silhouette with nipped in waists and full skirts - think Dior's New Look with a wartime twist. They even made gorgeous little hats from their wartime fabric, oh the resourcefulness of these ladies! And did I mention the amazing gloves? A must-have accessory, darling, especially paired with a lady-like shoulder bag.

As for me, I went all-out in my full, poofy, pink time-traveling tutu. You know, darling, you have to embrace the extravagance, right?! A little extra never hurt anyone! And you just know my entrance into that 1940s world, all in that dazzling pink tutu, must have turned a few heads, right?

Well, I waltzed myself into a bar that seemed particularly lively. No disco balls, darling, mind you! It was the era of live music and smoky jazz. The music, oh, it was pure velvet! I just knew this place was humming with the energy of history. The women wore beautiful gowns in such stylish shapes - fitted bodices with full skirts, nipped in waists, oh the glamor! It was as if every single woman had a vision of how to best show off their femininity in their wartime wardrobe!

They might not have had our modern-day, multi-colour palettes in their make-up kits, darling, but let me tell you, those girls were experts in achieving that timeless look with their dark, smoky eyes and red, cherry lips! They had that wartime elegance and a real sense of adventure about them! The fellas were dressed to the nines in suits, their hair styled perfectly, and the mood was joyous. This place felt electric, full of energy and excitement.

Then the music hit! The whole bar was rocking to swing music, you could almost hear a gentle hum of hope. They called it the 'Boogie-Woogie' and you could really see how that vibrant energy fuelled the nightlife. You can tell that they were making the most of the present moment, their smiles so bright, the laughter contagious!

You know darling, seeing all those lovely ladies, so beautifully dressed and brimming with joy... well, it made me reflect on the true meaning of ‘Drag’! In a way, they were already wearing it! Their wartime spirit was about making do with what they had, and creating a look that oozed a confidence that was almost drag-worthy! It was about expression, individuality and sheer joy – just like today's drag scene!

Sadly, there wasn't a real drag show in this bar in 1945 - oh to be a time traveler and able to change the course of history, eh? It wasn't easy finding drag back in those days. I'm sure it was kept hidden away from public gaze and carried out in hidden back alleys and cellars, the way they used to do things back then! I wish I could go back and be a part of that secret history of drag, but I'll stick to the glam of today’s scene instead.

Oh, and don't forget to visit my blog on www.pink-tutu.com, darling! There you'll find all my amazing tips and tricks on styling a gorgeous pink tutu and a chance to explore more of my Time Travel Adventures. Who knows what I’ll uncover next month? Until then, remember: Keep it fabulous, keep it pink and always keep your tutus twirling, darling! Until next time!
