Pink-tutu.com - Blog Post Number 426: June 1955: A Whirlwind Through The Decades!

Hiya darlings,

Emma here, your pink-tutu wearing time-travelling gal, ready to whisk you away to the glorious past – specifically, a super sparkly June in 1955! As always, my trusty pink tutu is feeling very excited about our monthly voyage through history. We’re always in for a treat, and this month, the pink and sparkly threads are about to become EXTRA glittery.

But before we dive into this fabulous decade, let me just give you a little update from yours truly. Did I tell you I’m putting together a ‘Pink-tutu Fashion Show’ in Derby? It’s going to be a right extravaganza, filled with pink tulle and fabulous feather boas, with all profits going to the local hospice – I know you lot are always giving back to your community! So keep your peepers peeled, dearies, I’ll be sharing more details about that next month!

Right then, grab your best fascinator, pop on your most delightful tea dress, and let’s hop aboard the time-travel machine - it’s 1955 and I’m feeling every ounce of the glam!

Oh Honey, It’s the 1950s!

Step back, my lovelies, into the world of crinoline skirts, perfectly quiffed hair, and bobby-dazzlers galore. Oh, how the world was in bloom, especially when it came to fashion. The ‘New Look’ – oh darling, it was all about that nipped waist and wide skirts, and my Tutu had me twirling in all the best Parisian salons – such a scene, so much inspiration for my own creations! It’s an era of true feminine flair – think Doris Day in a polka-dot dress with a sprinkle of sugar on top.

We are talking vintage elegance! But while everyone was living their best life, where was Drag, you ask? Well darling, don't be hasty – we must remember the ‘50s were still a period where things were much more behind the curtains and underground.

However, if you know where to look, it’s bubbling up. I found this delightful drag performance in a small gay bar in New York - oh, honey, these ladies had everything! The make-up, the costumes… even with the threat of raids, they held their heads high and entertained the whole night! It’s not quite the mainstream drag scene of today, but it was a start, my lovelies. The beginning of our own, big beautiful evolution.

The Pink-tutu Report

There were so many amazing highlights, let me just paint a little picture for you:

  • 1955 was a whirlwind! We saw a surge in social and cultural changes happening, although perhaps a little less dramatically than some decades. You can’t get past the new rock n roll sounds bubbling under the surface, like an explosion of energy waiting to be unleashed! And in our world, the dance floors are bursting with jitterbugs – perfect inspiration for some showstopping routines, you bet!
  • Our darling Marilyn Monroe became a household name. Honey, those glamorous curves, that perfect red lip... pure Drag inspiration, isn’t she? Her impact on fashion, on culture - it just makes me giddy! If she wasn’t already a drag icon, darling, she’s definitely one now!
  • 1955 saw the rise of television in households. Can you believe it? Now, I can see the world from my little dressing room! Oh darling, think of all the opportunities for Drag – television could become a huge stage for our artistry! The world is about to become more fabulous.

A Pink-tutu Dress Inspiration for June

1955 is the perfect era for a dash of polka dots, darling, and my time travels always make me thirsty for some fabulous fashion. Today, I'm channeling that early ‘50s glamour – a full, A-line pink skirt, cinched in with a sparkly pink belt. Imagine a sheer top, a dash of pearls, and maybe a touch of bright floral patterns – ooh, so cute! To top it off, the obligatory pink tutu, with just enough twirls and sparkle for the night! Now I know where to get my outfit: the vintage shops are overflowing with delights! It's about that classic, old Hollywood glamour, but with a little extra sprinkle of pink and sass for good measure, naturally!

Off to the Show

Tonight, darlings, I’m going to catch the fabulous drag show in Soho! They're renowned for their creativity – I'm thinking something avant-garde with some playful 50’s twists, just for me. And remember: never let anyone tell you a tutu doesn't belong at a Drag Show! So, gather up your loveliest attire, give that lip a kiss, and get ready to shine, my loves. Until next month, my darlings, and don’t forget to keep that pink tutu dusted off and ready to go!

Stay fab, stay sassy, and spread the joy of the pink tutu!
