Darling darlings,

Now, grab a cuppa and your best feather boa - we're jetting off to 7th July, 1955, where a whole lotta history is brewing, honey!

From Derbyshire with Love

It’s all happening from my little corner of Derbyshire this month, lovelies. Imagine, me, a young queen in my 20s, packing my latest, oh-so-divine pink tulle tutu for a time-traveling adventure! The feeling is exquisite. And I tell you, my dear friends, there’s nothing more delightful than stepping out of your time-traveler’s portal and smelling the sweet, slightly smoky scent of vintage perfume mixed with the earthy aroma of the era. The smell alone sends shivers of excitement down my spine.

Speaking of excitement, imagine this, my fabulous fiends – the world of drag in 1955! Picture it: cabaret clubs are springing up everywhere. The streets are alive with glitz, glam, and some seriously sharp outfits. It’s an absolute whirlwind of fabulousness!

Now, it’s the summer, and my heart’s aching for all the glittery drag street parties, summer fairs, and seaside cabarets – oh, how I long to sashay on those beaches with a beach-themed drag act, darling! And the costumes! I just have a hunch 1955 had stunning outfits for queens – a riot of bold colours, flowing fabrics, and maybe a sequin or two...

Let's Talk About Some Legends

We have to have a proper good gander at the world-famous legends of the time – and the ones just starting to climb their ladder of fabulousness. Imagine catching a performance by this one… or that one! My lips are sealed, babes, but let’s just say it’s unbelievable. It’s a golden era for drag – even if it was still behind closed doors in many places, the magic was brewing!

My friends, 1955, it's just buzzing with a thrilling energy – the feeling of a massive drag revolution coming! It's time to get to work! And my, what a glorious time for a pink tutu!

Time to Show Off

Now, before we leave, I just HAVE to gush about my upcoming drag shows! This month I’ll be shimmying and shaking in a show-stopping act that’s guaranteed to bring the house down! We’ll be dancing, twirling, and performing under the starry sky… Well, it almost felt like it because of the shimmering glitter in the studio, darlings! I can't wait to see you all there!

But Hold on a Minute...

As for my travel funding... Well, what can I say? The drag queen hustle is always real. Those fabulous shoes don't pay for themselves, love! So, to pay for all the sparkles and glitz of time travel, it’s show time! You all know how much I adore my drag performances and getting all dressed up – the crowd goes wild. After a while, I realised I could use my talents to finance my amazing adventures. It's just an excuse to strut my stuff, really. Who wouldn't?

What is going on in 1955 - Drag's Coming of Age!

Speaking of amazing adventures, let’s delve deeper into the wonderful, world of drag in 1955, shall we? Think of all the fabulous stories brewing in those smoky, clandestine nightclubs.

  • The vibrant, drag-fueled scenes are a sight to behold. They're hidden in smoky clubs and dive bars. Imagine legendary balls hosted by fearless, fearless individuals - with fabulous queens taking the floor and winning the crowds with their style and flair! There’s always a secret party buzzing in 1955 – you just have to be in the know to find it!
  • You’ll find legendary performances where stars were made… a hidden world with glamour, laughter, and secrets in equal measure. Some even tell whispers of drag performances happening at parties in houses and basements – that would be the peak of hush hush glamour.
  • It’s not always a glamour story. Drag queens often had to keep their identities secret. So, behind their show-stopping looks, they were navigating challenging lives in a changing society, especially after the war, when it was brave to perform as a drag queen.
  • Drag was being explored by Hollywood through films like “The Seven Year Itch” and other films of the time - which led to an enormous appetite for drag. The world is beginning to love and understand what these queens can offer.

As we take a deep dive into the glorious history of drag in the 50s, we can celebrate the strength and courage of the early drag queens! Their impact is incredible. Just look at how the landscape of drag is changing – and with those changes comes more opportunities for all of us!

Now, let’s raise our tiaras, grab some cocktails and sparkle to the **queens of 1955 – we wouldn’t be here today without their bravery, talent, and endless amount of glitter. It's a beautiful journey for drag through the decades – and you can join me, darlings.
