Hello darlings! π It's Emma here, your resident time-travelling ballerina queen from Derbyshire. You won't believe where my magical pink tutu whisked me off to this monthβ¦ 1964! π Can you imagine?! A time of swirling mini skirts, swinging music, and of course, the absolute FABULOUS rise of the Beatles! π€πΈ And my loves, this is a time period that oozed DRAG! π
Now, my trip started with a cheeky detour to Carnaby Street. You see, London was ablaze with vibrant colour and fashion, darling! Imagine boutiques bursting with mod gear, psychedelic prints, and outfits that would make a drag queen today swoon! ππ It was a riot of style and excitement, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't treat myself to a few fabulous garments. It's all in the name of research, my dears! π
Of course, being the drag history buff that I am, I knew I had to catch a glimpse of the scene at the legendary The Scene Club. This was where it all began, where the queens of London were showing the world their fabulous faces and undeniable charisma. And believe me, honey, it was a whole show! The queens of the night strutted their stuff with an energy that could light up the whole West End! ππ
And guess who was strutting along with them? None other than Danny La Rue! π Oh, he was absolutely flawless, my loves. His dress sense was EVERYTHING: sharp tailoring, chic headbands, and those dazzling eyelashes! I was truly captivated by his impeccable grace and undeniable wit, and even he looked delighted at how my pink tutu shimmered under the stage lights. ππ
Now, you know me, I can't just admire the stage - I've got to get involved! That evening, I slipped into the dressing room with a flourish, and before I knew it, I was sashaying backstage with the legendary queens. π This wasn't just a time-trip, it was an exclusive behind-the-scenes glimpse into the golden era of British drag. β¨
My time-travel escapades were punctuated by hilarious anecdotes from the queens. I discovered the art of using face paint in the days before contouring was even a word! π€£ (Letβs just say my early attempts at self-makeover left me looking more like a Picasso masterpiece than a glamorous diva.) But what they lacked in technique, they made up for in charisma and stage presence! π€©
And talking about charisma... π€ Could we talk about the Beatles? They were EVERYWHERE! Their music was pumping out from every cafΓ©, every corner, and their iconic looks were everywhere, from newspapers to billboards. It's easy to see why they were so influential - even my drag queens couldnβt help but tap their feet to βI Want To Hold Your Handβ π΅ It was infectious, my loves!
Iβve got to confess, one evening I even found myself caught up in the crowd outside the Cavern Club in Liverpool. I practically choked on my feather boa when the fab four appeared on stage. Imagine, that energy in that tiny room. And those screaming fans? That was something I never could have imagined, my loves. The raw passion was absolutely electric. β¨
But even the Beatlemania didn't distract from the thriving drag scene. π From London's West End to the cafes of Liverpool, queens were making their mark with fierce makeup, vibrant outfits, and their unforgettable flair. They were revolutionising entertainment - paving the way for generations of drag performers to come! π
Itβs times like this, my dears, that make me so proud of drag. β¨ Itβs about breaking down barriers, celebrating our uniqueness, and showing the world that true beauty lies in individuality. That's why my message this month is simple: Embrace your individuality! Put on your own fabulous frock and take a walk! Let the world know who you are, and what you represent, darling! π π
But enough about me - I want to know WHAT YOU THINK! Tell me about your experiences, your inspirations. Which iconic drag queens inspire you? Share your stories, your experiences - let's continue to celebrate this fabulous history! π
Now go get yourself a pink tutu and sashay out into the world! π
See you next month, my dears! π
