Hello darlings! Your favourite pink-loving, tutu-wearing, time-traveling blogger is back! Emma here, reporting from the ⊠well⊠I canât exactly reveal the location, can I? After all, if I told you exactly where Iâve popped off to, my fabulous pink tutu would turn into a butternut squash! đ± And we canât have that, now can we?
Let me put on my fabulous pink, glitter-covered spectacles and fill you in on my adventures! This month, I found myself transported, via my magical time-traveling pink tutu, back to the 11th of November 1964, which, as a Derbyshire girl at heart, I realised, was actually my Auntie Agatha's birthday! How exciting is that?
So, I hopped through the temporal tapestry and landed in... let's just say a bustling and bustling metropolis, but I shan't tell you where for fear of ruffling the time stream. The minute I touched down, I found myself in the middle of what looked like a fabulous drag show! Now, you can imagine, my dear readers, my inner scream queen did a complete cartwheel, a grand jetĂ©, and a split all in one go. You wouldnât believe what I saw!
Now, 1964 might seem a long time ago, but even back then, drag was still finding its flamboyant feet. But let me tell you, these queens werenât messing about! I spotted a bevy of glamour-pusses in flamboyant gowns that were more reminiscent of a Broadway musical than anything you'd find on a regular high street. The feathers, darling! The feathers! There were ostrich, marabou, peacock, every kind of feathered extravagance imaginable. These ladies looked like theyâd stepped straight out of a glittering fantasy. And the makeup, my dears, it was absolutely bonkers, in a fabulous way of course. You know I adore a good dramatic smoky eye!
One of the highlights, a sassy performer, who was channeling a fabulous Carmen Miranda look with a pineapple hat adorned with sparkling fruit and some killer hip action, even gave me a wink as I, you know, quietly observed (because we can't just openly wander through history disrupting the timeline, can we? Even if I had the best time travel tutu, darling!) And talking about pineapples, darling! They were the most trendy thing, everywhere! Even my trusty time travel tutu shimmered like a thousand pineapples, the pink tulle just twinkling with tiny holographic reflections of juicy, tropical, pineapple loveliness.
But let's get back to the drag, shall we? It wasnât all glam, darlings. These queens were more than just a pretty face. They were entertainers, comedic geniuses, and artists who knew how to work a room! One of the performers had the audience roaring with laughter with witty social commentary dressed up in glittering outfits and even more sparkling humour. Now that's my kinda drag! I must say, darling, they made me wish Iâd had the opportunity to catch these incredible performances back then. And I thought, âoh darling, how times have changedâŠâ yet, in so many ways, we are still, I feel, moving towards a world where self-expression and being your truest self is embraced more widely. I wouldn't be me without the fantastic drag queens of the past, paving the way for me to strut and twirl in my glorious pink tutu today, darling!
And it wasnât just the drag performances that I enjoyed, I discovered, while my magical time traveling pink tutu remained shimmeringly fabulous in this vibrant city, the fashion scene was bursting with colours and silhouettes. There were dramatic shifts, wide skirts and bold colours. I could have happily spent my entire time in this magical year just browsing the shop windows (not forgetting to find some tea time treats - you can never go wrong with a fabulous vintage afternoon tea!). Of course, as soon as the pink tutu time travels I have to leave to head home, which is what I do when the sun comes up!
What a fascinating journey it was. I canât tell you much more without breaking the fabric of reality, and besides, where's the fun in that, right? So until next time, stay fabulous, stay bold, and if you feel so inclined, put on your pinkest tutu (or even a dazzling pineapple one!) and celebrate the history of drag.
Iâm signing off now and catching the very latest drag shows on the local scene. Oh darling, you know I couldnât possibly miss them!
