Now, June 1971, darling, you just wouldn't believe the level of camp, the sass, and the sheer spectacle of it all! Imagine a world without TikToks or Insta-stories. Back then, it was all about getting your dose of drag at live shows, under the glow of a stage light, soaking it all in with your favourite fabulous friends.
Before I whisk you off to the stage, let's talk about my outfit! Honestly, this trip demanded nothing less than a full-on tutu transformation. Think ballerina pink tulle with layers upon layers of ruffles, sprinkled with enough glitter to make a disco ball blush. I paired it with a glittering leotard that screamed "I'm here to dance and shine" – and trust me, darling, it shone bright enough to outshine the sun!
Speaking of shining bright, the world of drag in 1971 was just bursting with talent and diversity. Picture it: a rainbow of styles, a spectrum of talent, and all of it on stage! My trip to NYC, dearie, was just phenomenal! The drag scene there was booming!
On June 5th, the iconic club, The Ninth Circle, in New York City, was the talk of the town. This place was the place to be for fabulous shows and a whole lot of attitude. The stage was alive with performers pushing boundaries, challenging expectations, and giving audiences the tea they craved!
And, of course, what’s a drag journey without a spot of shopping? Remember the era of vibrant colors and daring designs, darlings? I got myself a little something something at Bloomingdale's on 59th street – a bright blue sequined jacket that screamed '70s chic! Just thinking about that dazzling blue makes me want to throw a disco party!
Back to our show! You wouldn't believe the energy at The Ninth Circle. Imagine, all those vibrant personalities bursting with charisma, showcasing everything from witty comedic routines to dramatic ballads. They truly knew how to get an audience going. You couldn't keep a leg still! The cheers and applause echoed throughout the night – pure, unadulterated joy!
On a much smaller scale, in London's iconic club, The Black Cat, the scene was just as vibrant! A little quieter, perhaps, but just as impactful. They had the one and only Miss Penny Arcade in full force! Now, that woman could tell a story like nobody's business, leaving you with both laughter and a little pang of poignancy – it was pure storytelling magic.
But remember, my darlings, drag wasn’t confined to city limits. June 1971 was also brimming with fantastic drag performances happening all across the globe! From San Francisco to Sydney, drag was flourishing – and spreading the message of acceptance and celebrating difference with every performance!
As I finished my time travel jaunt, I thought to myself: what a truly inspiring time period for drag! We see so many parallels between the vibrant drag scenes back then and what we witness today – the creativity, the acceptance, the drive for individuality. It's a true testament to the powerful impact of drag.
