Pink Tutu Travels: 5th May, 1973 – A Trip to the Fabulous 70s! 🩰💖

Hello lovelies! 💅💖 Emma here, back with another fabulous journey through the time vortex in my trusty pink tutu! It’s been a whole month since our last jaunt – oh my goodness, where has the time gone? It’s post number 641, folks! Just think, in 641 weeks time, we’ll be in the year… oh, dear, better put my brain back in my pink tiara, I can’t even imagine what the year… oh let's just say, far, far into the future, dearie! 😄

Speaking of time, we're about to embark on a journey to the fabulous 70s! Imagine, darling, no social media, no mobile phones (except for a landline! Oh, how we’ve forgotten those!), no Deliveroo... life was a lot slower then. But that’s where drag comes in. The magic, the glitter, the life-affirming fabulousness… it makes everything sparkle just a little bit brighter, wouldn’t you agree? ✨

Right then, my little sweeties, climb aboard the time traveling pink tutu, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride, because, darling, today we’re going to… New York!

A Night in the Big Apple 🍎

1973 – oh my, I just can't help but feel a wave of nostalgia wash over me. The world was just beginning to embrace disco fever, and boy, did drag queens embrace it! Soaring platforms, glamorous sequin jumpsuits, wild hair, and an explosion of colour, just the way I love it!

Imagine arriving in the Big Apple, stepping out of my pink tutu’s time portal right onto Times Square! You couldn’t help but feel the electricity in the air, darling! ✨

Speaking of electricity, this is the very month that the fabulous “Cockettes” took the stage at The Ritz. The Cockettes! Do you remember those girls? An amazing group of drag queens who, back in the 60s, made the San Francisco scene their playground with their outrageous fashion and performances. Imagine, darling, being part of the crowd, giggling and shouting with them all as they take the stage, dancing and prancing in the most wonderfully chaotic and joyous spectacle! I can practically hear the drums! 🥁

I can see it now, my dear! The glittering makeup, the exaggerated eyebrows and eye shadow, and all that shimmering beauty. Ah, the glory days! This era truly gave us some truly legendary figures! I'm thinking Marsha P. Johnson, Jackie Curtis, Holly Woodlawn… such pioneers, darling! True drag legends, paving the way for all of us. ❤️

And guess what else was going on in this month, back in 1973? You wouldn’t believe this, darlings!

This very same day, May 5th, The New York Times actually printed an article about drag, specifically discussing the drag balls! This was a huge deal in those days! It helped to bring awareness and even legitimacy to the world of drag, paving the way for future recognition and even respect.

Fashion and Glamour

Did I mention the fashion, darlings? My goodness, it was all about flamboyant colours, feathers, sequins, and of course, tons and tons of sparkle! They used every colour imaginable – I’m talking about those vibrant colours that would put a rainbow to shame. Pink, purple, gold, orange, and oh, all the different shades of blue! Don’t even get me started on the glitter, it was everywhere – you could feel it in the air! They called it the 'glam rock' era, and frankly, my dears, the term suits the dazzling scene perfectly. ✨

Oh, and let’s not forget about the hairstyles! We're talking enormous beehives, huge Afros, flowing long locks… hair that would put your most daring wig to shame. They embraced everything and anything! A true celebration of individualism!

But you know me, darling! Nothing can top the excitement of exploring the local drag scene and discovering new talent! You can't beat the raw energy, the vibrant expressions, and the sense of belonging that a good drag show can bring. You get that rush, the excitement, the joy – it's so thrilling to witness that magic, live! 🎭

Imagine walking through the streets of New York, stopping to check out the fabulous shops and stalls. Maybe even try on some of the amazing outfits, taking inspiration for my next fabulous outfit. I think a shiny gold jumpsuit might be in order. Oh, darling, think of the photo opportunities! It's a dream, I tell you, an absolute dream! 💖

I've even been collecting pictures from 1973 to give you a peek into that spectacular era, a reminder of the dazzling beginnings of a phenomenal world that continues to be an inspiration today.

**Oh my darlings, the world of drag in 1973 was something else, and it was only just beginning to bloom. ✨ Imagine, darling, where it all led. Look where it has taken us. We truly stand on the shoulders of giants. But the journey continues! And we will keep creating a world of glitz, glamour and gorgeousness for all of us!

And you know me, dearies, this blog isn't complete without some fun! 💖 So, tell me, do you have any memories of the 70s that you would like to share? I am always eager to hear about all your experiences and memories about drag! And don't forget, we'll be continuing on this wild ride every month on pink-tutu.com! We’re bringing the world of drag to life – one glittering post at a time. 💖 Until next time, keep twirling and be fabulous! 💃🏻💖**
