Hello, my darlings! Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, your one-stop shop for all things pink, fabulous and time-traveling! Your girl Emma is here, and this month, I'm whisking us back to June 6th, 1973, a date dripping in disco glitz and glamorous gowns, a time where the stage lights were brighter than ever!
You know me, I'm always up for a time-traveling adventure, and today I'm going back to the era of platform shoes and bell-bottoms! Now, this particular trip took me on quite the rollercoaster. Just imagine: shimmering sequined outfits, hairspray fumes stronger than a 70s dancefloor and the thumping bassline of a brand new disco era! The excitement was enough to make my perfectly feathered boa twitch with glee!
To get us started, imagine me, dressed in my finest hot pink tulle creation (you know, my "Oh Honey, Look At Me" Tutu!), a bejeweled choker, and a feathered boa so big, it could rival a flamingo! (Of course, I wouldn't want to offend a lovely bird!) But let's be real, honey, if it weren't for my magical time-traveling tutu, I'd be struggling with the luggage allowance at the airport, what with my massive trunk filled with sparkly platform shoes, oversized sunglasses, and enough glitter to make a disco ball jealous.
And as soon as I popped back in time, the first thing I noticed was the music! The pulsating energy of disco was palpable, all around! Everyone had the "let loose" vibe. The era where disco took hold and became more than a dance genre; it was a way of life! And honey, let me tell you, it was EVERYTHING!
From the bright lights of the stage to the roaring crowds, it felt like the entire world had been caught up in the magic of disco.
Now, don't think I only went to the glamorous discos; that wouldn't be "Emma-approved" at all! My time-traveling agenda was jam-packed with all kinds of fabulous discoveries:
Let's Talk About Broadway!
New York City's iconic theatre scene was absolutely on fire. Broadway was a treasure trove of dazzling performances. On that very day, I went to catch a show called “The Great God Brown,” written by the legendary Eugene O'Neill! This particular show was about this character, who decides to don a mask for the entire play.
Can you even imagine? Wearing a mask for a whole show! That's bold, hun, especially for those times! Of course, no drama is complete without some heartbreak, so the story unravels with him uncovering the identity of his father. But, to spice things up, his son becomes the father he himself desperately wanted! Sounds a bit theatrical for my taste, but honey, if there was a pink tutu on that stage, you can be sure I'd be the first in line for tickets.
But honey, hold onto your fascinators, because things got even more glam!
London's Got The Moves!
Oh, darling, did I tell you about the Royal Ballet's show in Covent Garden? They were performing "Giselle" by Adolphe Adam. Ballet is a queen's passion, especially for someone who loves a tulle masterpiece like myself! I must admit, I swooned a little, just watching those dancers effortlessly glide across the stage in their exquisite white tutus. Ballet and drag are, let’s face it, sisters, honey! Both demand artistry and, you know, fabulousity! They're like the yin and the yang, and both have that special kind of magical, spellbinding power!
Imagine if I had worn my time-traveling pink tutu on the stage, alongside all those incredible dancers! Just the thought has my heart fluttering. That would have been a fabulous visual!
Disco Fever is in the Air!
Disco wasn't just about the dancefloor and those amazing shimmering dresses (a big hit back then, hun, you know!), It was a complete and total explosion of colour, glamour, and pure fun. Now, if I was back then in those disco nights, darling, I wouldn’t have even thought twice about dancing on a table, all while doing the disco hustle! I probably even would have made an appearance on “Soul Train.” You can imagine the camera focusing on me - my pink tutu bouncing, a true star of the show. Now wouldn’t that be something?
Let's be real for a second, those vibrant colours, and that high-energy spirit is exactly what drag is all about. Every time I step into the spotlight, I embrace that same sense of energy and excitement, adding my unique touch, just like those incredible disco queens. And remember, our motto is “be yourself, honey.” You wanna wear a pink tutu, be daring and sparkly? I'm here to tell you to absolutely rock that look!
The Golden Era of Drag!
Even in 1973, drag queens were taking the stage by storm. The spirit of the Drag Queen wasn't limited to the stage, it was in the clubs, the streets, everywhere, living a fearless, confident life!
And, like always, honey, drag has had the most phenomenal evolution, like those beautiful butterflies coming out of their cocoons! Remember how Drag Ball became the new big thing back in the '80s? We owe that, in a lot of ways, to all the incredible Queens who were brave enough to step into the spotlight and show us that “drag” was something beautiful and wonderful. Drag Queens were (and still are!) so inspiring and encouraging! And we are SO grateful for the fabulous ladies who laid down the groundwork for all the queens that followed in their glittering, fabulous footsteps!
Time Travel Through Your Wardrobe
Remember, queens, it's never too late to bring your own kind of sparkle to the world. So get yourself a fabulous pink tutu and get ready to make history with it. Go on, honey, you know you want to. Remember, every one of you has the power to channel that glorious disco era, the creativity of those incredible stage performers, and bring that vibrant energy into your own style!
I'm always searching for inspiration, honey. Just imagine the endless possibilities!
And now, to leave you all with a reminder, your own pink tutu is waiting, and I hope this time-traveling adventure has brought a bit of glitter and fabulousness to your day.
Remember to check back next month, my darlings, because there is so much more history to share! But until then, stay fabulous, stay confident and most importantly, rock that pink tutu with confidence!
XOXO,
Emma
