Hiya Darlings!
Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com! It’s your gal, Emma, back from another fabulous trip in the pinkest, twirliest, most magical time travelling tutu in the whole world! This month, we’re going back to June 1974, a year where disco was starting to dominate the airwaves and the world was getting ready for the iconic glitter that would define the late 70s. And let me tell you, even though we didn't have the RuPaul's Drag Race phenomenon back then, drag was booming and ready to take the world by storm!
My monthly drag-venture this time took me to… drumroll… New York City! Oh, the excitement! Imagine, darling, stepping into a bustling New York City in the 70s, feeling the energy buzzing around me as I hit the pavement in my fabulous pink tutu! Let me tell you, it was truly an unforgettable experience.
Before we dive into the delicious world of 70s New York drag, I have to spill the tea on my time-travelling adventure. As you know, this gorgeous tutu is my key to unlocking history. It’s more than just fabric, darlings, it’s pure magic. A touch here, a spin there, and voila I'm transported back in time. My trusty tutu takes me to the most fabulous, shimmering places - think glittering balls, exciting shows, and glamorous streets. Honestly, it's all rather splendid, darling!
And this month’s adventure? Oh my, it was divine! It took me straight to the iconic The Ninth Circle - the first nightclub to embrace drag on a regular basis, known for hosting some of the most legendary drag performers of the 70s.
I strutted into the Ninth Circle with the confidence of a queen, and the energy was palpable, electric, filled with a buzzing anticipation. This place wasn't just a nightclub; it was a haven for artistic expression, for flamboyance, for drag!
The show started and my heart went into overdrive. A kaleidoscope of colours and characters burst onto the stage, defying societal norms with every fabulous strut and campy flick of the wrist. The show had this rawness, this authenticity that only the 70s could bring. No polished, staged performances here!
I was mesmerized. They owned the stage, their flamboyant attire and charismatic personalities sending waves of joy throughout the packed nightclub. There was Jackie Curtis, the performance artist and playwright who was already a star in the scene, and the iconic Holly Woodlawn, who looked divine in a dress that could make a vicar blush, dazzling the crowd with her mesmerizing aura.
The beauty of the show was not just about the performers but the crowd itself! The people in the audience were dressed in outfits as extraordinary as those on stage. Feathers, glitter, and platform heels were a dime a dozen, and it was a joy to behold. Everyone embraced this spirit of free expression, and the atmosphere was infectious.
But the highlight of the night came when I saw the legendary Divine! This incredible drag queen, known for her campy style and unique beauty, brought the house down. She owned the stage, commanding attention with every movement.
Divine was larger than life. This powerhouse queen was one of the original drag stars, who paved the way for many performers today. They were already a household name in the New York drag scene, making a big name for themselves even beyond the stage in underground films.
They say the 70s were a decade for self-expression, for pushing boundaries, and for creating something totally different from the norms of the past. The energy that buzzed throughout The Ninth Circle, the raw power and joy that I witnessed in that fabulous club, is what truly cemented the 70s as a decade for daringly inventive art, creativity, and acceptance!
And, oh, darling, what a blast I had shopping afterwards! I found some fabulous vintage dresses and boots that are going straight to my collection. But I know what you are really wanting to know, dear reader! Are those dresses and boots pink?
Absolutely!* It was all about bold colours and eye-catching pieces back then, and pink was king. I managed to grab myself some show-stopping garments - imagine a vibrant pink feather boa with sequins that caught the light. Pure magic!
But let's talk about our mission, darling. Remember, my life goal is to get everyone, everywhere, rocking a fabulous pink tutu! In a world where fashion is a form of expression, it’s all about embracing our unique selves. And darling, what’s better than showing your inner glamour than by wearing a magical pink tutu? It doesn't have to be a costume; it can be an expression of your own personality. We should all strive for a world where tutus are commonplace and where wearing pink is no longer a taboo!
If you are new to pink, try wearing one under a cute outfit. No one needs to know it’s under there unless you choose to share the pink magic. You’re gonna look incredible, darling! So, spread the love of pink tutus wherever you go, because every single one of you, dear reader, deserves to feel that extraordinary confidence!
And finally, my lovely readers, before I say farewell for another month, here are some extra drag-tastic tips that I discovered on my trip back in June 1974, so you can truly shine:
Embrace your true self!
The 70s were a decade where embracing yourself for who you are was absolutely essential, and darling, this is just as true today! Do you, and do it with all your heart. And, who knows, perhaps you'll even find a fabulous tutu!
Go Bold or Go Home!
Don’t be afraid to stand out. Be fearless with your outfits! Add some extra drama with feathers, sequins, and bold colours, and don’t forget a statement shoe.
Remember, you can't be fabulous unless you try!
Remember, it’s about having fun and being a part of the fabulous community. And honestly, a sprinkle of glittery pink certainly won’t hurt!
I’m off on another adventure, darling. Remember to always express yourselves and never stop shining! And don't forget to tune in next month for another trip through the exciting history of Drag with Pink-Tutu.com. Until then, spread the joy and share the pink magic, darling!
Love, Emma xXx
