Emma's Pink Tutu Time Travels - Blog Post #659 - November 11th, 1974!

Hello my gorgeous darlings! Welcome back to Emma’s Pink Tutu Time Travels! šŸ’…

It's that time of the month again - time for a journey through the annals of drag history! I'm channeling my inner Marie Kondo this month, getting organised, tidying up the timeline, and throwing it back to November 11th, 1974!

Let's start with the outfit, shall we? For my 1974 adventure, I've gone with a glorious vintage-inspired ensemble. A fierce hot pink tutu with a floaty, gauzy skirt cascading down to my ankles, all finished off with a vintage, beaded pink bolero with a plunging neckline. A bit of sparkle for the eye! Oh, and of course, a pair of sassy stilettos for a bit of extra oomph! Because every drag queen knows, the shoes are where it's at!

Okay, let’s pop that time travel tutu on… and whoosh! Here I am…

11th November, 1974, New York City!

Wow! I’m standing in Greenwich Village and my senses are overloaded! The streets are bursting with energy, and the air is thick with the heady cocktail of liberation and possibility! This was the height of the ā€œDisco Feverā€ era, and NYC was the epicenter of everything fabulous and daring!

My first stop? The Rainbow Room, nestled in the iconic Rainbow Grill nightclub! This place is legendary! It’s a veritable melting pot of artistry, culture and drag excellence! I've heard whispers about a sassy young queen named Divine, known for her extravagant makeup and playful humour, who will be lighting up the stage here. Oh, and I hear they're showing the new cult classic horror film "Pink Flamingos". A little edgy for my usual aesthetic, but I’m all about expanding my cultural horizons. šŸ’…

And talk about expanding horizons... my sweet darlings! The New York drag scene is truly spectacular! Queens are taking the stage everywhere - in the gay clubs and even the "straight" bars! We are seeing more of the "punk" style too, which is super interesting! They are starting to adopt the ā€œlook at meā€ attitude - bright colours, flamboyant costumes, a defiant embrace of the non-conforming!

It feels exhilarating to be a part of such a powerful movement, a moment when drag is finding its voice, pushing boundaries and expressing itself without fear. Just like I try to do! 😜

## A Parisian Stroll - November 11th, 1974

Let's jet over the Atlantic! A quick ā€œtutuberate" (it's like teleportation but with a lot more glamour!) later, I’m on the cobblestone streets of Paris, soaking up the Parisian charm, and feeling my way into the heart of La Belle Ɖpoque. I'm on a quest to explore a drag history treasure – the Le Palace nightclub!

Oh, my darlings! The moment I stepped inside Le Palace, it was like entering a glamorous, time-warp! The energy crackles in the air! I’ve been dreaming of this night club for ages, hearing legends about the drag royalty that have walked through those doors. This club has seen it all! It’s been home to incredible artists, ground-breaking performers and outrageous drag nights!

I’ve heard that a groundbreaking performer, Divine, is having one of her first international tours right now! Imagine! Seeing her perform in a new city, bringing her unique talent and humour to a Parisian crowd… I’ve just got to see this show!

It’s an explosion of feathers, glitter and audacity! There are queens in their finery, singing, dancing, making jokes, living their truths! There’s also a fascinating, new wave of performance art – people are combining their artistic vision with their love of performance, defying traditional theatrical structures. I love it!

This is what truly makes drag magic! A powerful blend of self-expression and storytelling, using beauty and the human form to communicate stories. It's a celebration of life, a rebellion against norms and the art of making people smile!

Emma's Fashion Findings

Let's get a little fashion inspiration shall we? What caught my eye on November 11th, 1974, was the beautiful way they are blending feminine looks with a modern sensibility.

  1. The Glamorous Bohemian: That’s right, darling, a dash of hippie style, paired with glamor and Parisian chic! I saw this one woman dressed in an elegant long, flowing, floor-length floral dress, accessorized with a sparkly vintage choker necklace! It’s just the right balance of bohemian style with a sprinkle of Hollywood glamour.

  2. Sparkle & Sass: Of course! This is the 1970s! Everyone is wearing as much glitter and sparkle as possible. Whether it's a sequined blouse, an oversized sparkly jacket or a flamboyant hat, sparkle is everything! The more sparkle, the better!

    1. The Disco Queen: Don’t be afraid to try that daring disco look - tight, glittering jumpsuits, high-platform shoes and plenty of hairspray!

It’s the 1970s, it's a time for everyone to step into the light! Go on! I’m channeling all that confidence and daring.

Time for a Cuppa… or Maybe a Pink Cocktail!

That's it for my pink tutu travels this time. What an incredible journey! The vibrant energy of New York and Paris and the spirit of rebellion are just what I needed.

You know what else I need? A good cuppa (I'm a Derbyshire girl after all!)! And to unwind after a night of seeing all that fabulousness, a cocktail sounds wonderful! Perhaps something sweet and pink, maybe even a ā€œPink Ladyā€?

Until next time darlings, don't forget, pink is the colour of happiness! Don’t be afraid to embrace your individuality, be fearless, and wear that pink tutu with pride!
