Post Number 660: December 12th 1974: A Whirlwind of Feathers & Sequins

Hello darling dears! It’s your girl, Emma, back with another dazzling dive into drag history, served piping hot straight from my pink, sparkly, time-travelling tutu! This month, my loves, we’re whisking back to a fabulous December 12th, 1974. The air crackles with anticipation as we step into the magical world of drag from just a mere forty-nine years ago! I’m telling you, honey, this is a day that had it all!

As I shimmer through time in my iridescent tutu, I’m hit by the warmth of the season and the unmistakable buzz of the holiday spirit. The streets are a flurry of festive excitement, and even the frosty wind feels like it’s whispering a melody of sequins and feathers. It’s the perfect backdrop for a night of fabulous drag, darling!

Speaking of fabulous, imagine my delight at landing right in the middle of the “Miss Gay America” competition in San Francisco. Oh, how I yearn for a glimpse of this legendary spectacle! Sadly, darling, it's one of those "couldn’t go" scenarios. You see, back in the 70s, time travel was still a little touchy for the rules of the universe, and even I wasn’t quite ready to throw myself into the jaws of history’s complexities. But I can tell you from the vintage newspaper articles and old gossip that the competition was ablaze with glamour!

Speaking of glamour, can you imagine the fashions, darling?! We’re talking floor-length gowns, towering wigs, and more sequins than you can shake a sparkly wand at! Oh, the extravagance of it all! I'm feeling a sudden craving for a trip to the 70s for some vintage drag shopping. My wardrobe’s yearning for a bit of vintage flair!

And who was crowned "Miss Gay America" this year? The glamorous Holly Woodlawn, a star from Andy Warhol's Factory scene. Now that's what I call a legacy! She truly embodies the spirit of a queen with a capital "Q," breaking down barriers and gracing stages with the fierce spirit of a lion in a fabulous dress. Oh, honey, I adore her!

The world of drag wasn’t just limited to San Francisco, of course. The glitterati were taking the stage all over the world, lighting up hearts and igniting audiences with their charisma and showmanship. From London’s intimate basement venues to the booming New York clubs, the spirit of drag was vibrant and alive! Just a mere skip across the Atlantic, you can catch a glimpse of “The Club”, London’s hub for all things gay, vibrant, and utterly unique. I simply must find a time machine that travels in increments of 15 minutes so I can properly check out this haven of fabulousness!

And can we talk about the fashion?! Oh, the joy of exploring those vintage looks. 70s drag had its own unique energy, brimming with vibrant colours, playful textures, and an unapologetic expression of individuality. It was a true celebration of self, unafraid to break boundaries and push creative limits.

As always, my sweet dears, this trip down memory lane leaves me utterly inspired. It’s a reminder of the enduring spirit of drag, the bravery of those who paved the way, and the vibrant beauty of its continuous evolution. It truly is a gift, honey, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything!

Before I leave you to immerse yourselves in your own drag adventures, darling dears, remember this: Wear your pink tutus with pride.
