Hiya darlings! Your girl Emma here, back again for another fabulous foray into the dazzling depths of drag history, all courtesy of my magical pink tutu! Today we’re taking a trip to the fab-tastic year of 1975, specifically the 3rd of March – the day this divine blog post will forever be dedicated to!
Oh darling, do you know what’s the best thing about travelling through time? Why, it’s seeing how much we’ve come since the old days, and also getting inspiration for our looks, naturally. I’ve always been a lover of all things vintage and sparkly, and I simply cannot resist a good feathered boa or sequined cape, no matter the decade. That's why my time travel is always so thrilling, and I just have to share the magical moments I experience with all of you!
Now, today, on the 3rd of March 1975, things were certainly simmering in the drag scene, much like a perfectly cooked drag queen-themed dinner party! It wasn't as mainstream as it is now, darling, but the spark was there. Imagine, if you will, the streets of New York City, all jazzy and energetic, with places like The Stonewall Inn holding court, a place brimming with the beautiful energy of the drag community. Oh, if only my time travel could transport me straight into the thick of it!
That night in 1975, on a stage somewhere in a city buzzing with creative energy, a queen named Holly Woodlawn, with her inimitable, shimmering charm, was probably putting on a show that stopped traffic. Now, Holly Woodlawn is one of those queens who simply has to be admired for her trailblazing, sassy, and wonderfully bold energy, paving the way for queens like myself!
While I don't know exactly where the party was happening, you bet I was mentally there, perched on a plush, velvet chair with my trusty notebook in hand, sipping a cheeky cocktail and watching the drama unfold. Just imagine, darlings, the incredible energy in the air! This is why we time travel, you see. To see the foundations laid, the energy buzzing, the looks changing, and, most importantly, the stories taking shape.
As I’m writing this, you know my heart is thumping like a bass drum! Imagine that moment, standing there in a 1975 nightclub with Holly Woodlawn – a queen so full of grace and beauty. You bet I’m picturing her fabulous style, so on-trend and fierce, like a burst of glamorous fireworks on a stage! And let's not forget the incredible drag community back then. Imagine the energy, the creativity, and the sheer power that emanated from their performances – just pure, unfiltered artistry!
You know, we must never forget those queens who came before us! Each and every one of them had a part to play in shaping our beautiful scene. So, next time you’re looking for inspiration, maybe even a killer outfit idea, don't forget to take a little trip into the past, darlings! And don't be afraid to wear a little extra glitter - after all, you never know where you might end up next!
