Pink Tutu Time Travel: A Drag Queen’s Guide to April 4th, 1975!

Hello darlings! Emma here, your favourite Derbyshire drag queen time traveler. Get ready to shimmy and sashay as we twirl through the time warp for another edition of my monthly Pink Tutu Time Travel adventures!

Post Number 664: A Pink Paradise in 1975

This month, my fabulous time traveling tutu has whisked me back to the glorious year of 1975. Now, I must admit, even for a queen of fashion, this was quite the fashion revolution. Can you imagine: platforms, disco pants, and those incredible oversized collars? It was all about making a statement, and I’m pretty sure those clothes shouted "I'm here, I'm fabulous, and I'm going to party!"

Speaking of party, April 4th, 1975, was just the place to be. You see, darlings, it wasn't just a regular Friday night; it was the grand opening night of The Back Room at the famous Andy Warhol's Factory in New York City. The Back Room, a secret cabaret venue, was a space where anything went. You’d have musicians, performers, poets, and yes, even drag queens, all joining forces to make art and express themselves. Can you imagine? All that creativity bubbling in one space? This was the epicenter of the downtown New York drag scene - truly an exciting time.

My inner fashionista went bonkers when I arrived in New York. Everything was so bold and daring. You wouldn’t see these fashions in Derbyshire back in 1975! The colours were vibrant, the hair was voluminous, and the makeup was anything but subtle. Honestly, darlings, I felt right at home.

Now, as a dedicated fan of drag, it wasn’t just the style that drew me to The Back Room. I had to find out who was captivating these New York crowds. This is where the true stars of the show stepped in. Queens like Jackie Curtis, a legend who broke barriers with their unconventional and boundary-pushing performances, and Divine, who brought the ultimate camp and outrageous glamour. It was an honour just to be a fly on the wall as these true trailblazers showcased their talent.

Fashion is Key, Darling!

Remember what I said about the bold, colourful style of 1975? Well, darling, my fellow drag queens were taking it up a notch. Let me tell you, I spent a good portion of my time trying on platform shoes and finding the perfect shade of pink lipstick to channel the disco vibes of 1975.

In the world of fashion, 1975 was the year that glam rock really took off, and it’s still impacting us today. From the flamboyant platform shoes to the bright colors and unique textures, glam rock pushed fashion boundaries and challenged traditional notions of beauty. We're all channeling those 70's glam influences, even if we aren't all rocking those platform shoes.

Finding Inspiration:

You know what's truly amazing about this whole time traveling experience, darling? Every time I visit a new period, I’m filled with fresh inspiration for my performances and outfits. Seeing how different queens and artists expressed themselves gives me new ideas and expands my drag persona. That's the magic of drag, don't you think? It's a canvas for self-expression and an invitation to explore who you are, no matter the era!

And darling, while the era was absolutely vibrant, I gotta admit that those platform shoes were a real challenge. They didn't quite hold my 21st century sensibilities. But, with my amazing tutu, I can handle any situation! It was amazing to have a glimpse of the fabulous energy at The Back Room. Just picture it: dancing and singing alongside Jackie Curtis and Divine, all in the middle of New York City. A drag queen can dream, can't she?

Remember, darling, history repeats itself. Everything that happened in 1975 can teach us something about the future.
