Post Number 695: 11th November, 1977: From Derbyshire to Disco Fever in New York!

Hello my darlings! Emma here, your very own time-travelling tutu enthusiast, ready to take you on another magical trip through drag history! Today, we're swirling back to 11th November, 1977. Now, I don't know about you, but I always find November a tad dreary, like a soggy custard tart left out in the rain.

But don't worry! My fabulous pink tutu will banish any dreary vibes with a sprinkle of glitter and a dash of high kicks! As always, I'm funding my adventures with fabulous performances, twirling across the stage, snatching wigs and hearts, all in the name of love and fabulousness!

This month, I decided to pop over to New York City, just a quick hop across the Atlantic in my trusty pink tutu. Oh, the hustle and bustle, the honking cabs and the aroma of sizzling hotdogs – this city was electric!

But even with the noise and crowds, there was something about the atmosphere of New York in 1977 that felt…electric! You know what I'm saying? There was a tangible buzz in the air, and it had everything to do with the disco fever that was sweeping the globe!

This wasn't just a passing fad, dears. This was a cultural phenomenon! It was music, fashion, dance, a celebration of life itself! People were shaking it off on dance floors, spinning in glitter and feathers, the beat thrumming like a heartbeat!

And in the heart of it all, the drag scene was flourishing! Now, I have to say, the looks were divine, darlings! Think Jackie Collins glam meets Hollywood elegance meets Studio 54 nightlife all mixed together in a sparkly cauldron of pure, unadulterated fabulousness.

So where did I go, you ask? Well, naturally, I had to make a pilgrimage to The Saint on 10th Avenue, a legendary drag club owned and operated by the incredible Divine! Divine! Such an icon! So glamorous! Her stage presence was electric, and she embodied the true spirit of New York drag – fierce, outrageous, and oh so fabulous!

This place was a hive of activity. Drag queens from all walks of life – stunning, hilarious, and wildly creative – strutted, stomped, and shimmied their way through their acts. Every performance was an experience, an escape from the everyday and into the world of fantasy and sparkle.

I felt a right tingle of inspiration watching these Queens in action. Their energy, their commitment to their craft, their joyous exuberance... it was contagious! They owned the stage, and they owned the space around them. And it made me, the little Derbyshire gal, want to just fling off my tutu and shimmy along with them!

Of course, the club was full of fashionable people who had embraced the disco spirit, flaunting bold colours and bold cuts. It was a feast for the eyes – feathered boas, sparkly dresses, metallic pants, and of course, loads of fabulous platform shoes! Even the waiters were sporting bell-bottom pants and mirrored shirts. It was a glorious explosion of fashion!

And speaking of fashion, I did some serious shopping. Now, New York in 1977 was just the place for me to find a truly divine collection of sequined hotpants, platform shoes with the tallest heels you ever saw, and even a pair of feathered headbands for my trusty pink tutu! It's truly a fashion era for the books, I tell you.

I remember even getting to see The Village People perform! The music, the dancing, the costumes! Just glorious! I was completely enchanted. It reminded me that sometimes, the most important thing is to celebrate the joy of being alive and express your inner fabulousness to the world!

So, dears, next time you feel the blues creeping in, just put on some disco, dust off your sequins, and shimmy, shake, and spin! And don't forget – a pink tutu can make everything just a bit more magical!
