Hello darlings, Emma here, your resident pink tutu-clad time traveler from Derbyshire, and welcome to post number 696 on my little blog here at www.pink-tutu.com! I hope you're all having a smashing time and ready to dive into another magical journey with me! This month, my magical pink tutu whisked me all the way back to 1977 - a truly fabulous era for all things camp and glamorous!
Today's date, December 12th, marked a momentous occasion, a night of utter fabulosity! While you lot might be rocking out to some disco tunes or settling in for a quiet night with your loved ones, in the bustling city of New York, the legend herself, Divine, was making history! Yes, darling, you heard that right! She graced the stage of the legendary "The Roxy", a nightclub that would go down in drag history!
It was truly a moment to behold. Imagine, the iconic Divine, looking absolutely stunning, adorned in that outrageous style that made her famous! Now, if there's anything I love more than a pink tutu, it's the bold, dramatic glamour of Divine! You can't tell me her presence on the stage didn't set the club on fire, lighting it up with a million glittery sparks!
But hold your horses, the drag delights didn't end there, not by a long shot! Across the pond, in the vibrant city of London, the Gay Sweatshop was staging its spectacular "Christmas Ball." Can you believe it? Even way back in '77, the LGBTQ+ community was embracing the spirit of Christmas in the most glorious way. It just goes to show that our community has always been about celebrating and uniting, no matter the time period.
Meanwhile, in a small, but fiercely passionate theatre space in San Francisco, Cockettes were preparing for their upcoming show! You know me, a lover of theatre and a bit of a drag history buff, and I'm always in awe of the groundbreaking work done by this extraordinary group. Cockettes, with their flamboyant, satirical drag and unconventional performance styles, were at the forefront of drag culture in the 1970s!
Of course, no time travel would be complete without some shopping, right? And when you're in 1977, darling, it was all about the latest in disco fashions! It was like a rainbow explosion of sequins, shimmer, and bold colours! My eyes practically popped out of their sockets, but thankfully, the pink tutu protected my glamorous self from a fright! And of course, no shopping spree is complete without a trip to "The Wig Shop", where every single style, every shade, was at your fingertips!
Now, I may not be a full-blown disco enthusiast, but there's no denying the energy and creativity of the era! This was a time when drag truly thrived, paving the way for the diverse and inclusive world of drag we enjoy today.
So, while we bask in the warm glow of a pink-tutu-laden December, remember, dear friends, that history doesn't exist in a vacuum. Our past has shaped who we are today, and the drag icons of 1977 continue to inspire us with their bravery, their artistry, and their love of flamboyant expression. Remember, you don't need a time-traveling pink tutu to explore history, you just need an open mind and a whole lot of glitter!
So, go out there, wear a pink tutu, embrace the history, and never be afraid to express yourself!
Catch you next time, lovelies, and don't forget to stay fabulous!
Yours always, Emma
