Hello my darlings! Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing time-travelling drag queen blogger, back with another dazzling journey through history. This month, we're stepping back in time to the glorious year of 1980! Oh honey, imagine the big hair, the neon colours, and the music, oh my!
This time travel is extra special, because it coincides with the 9th of September, my dear sweet birthday! So, grab a cocktail, a sprinkle of glitter, and let's dance our way back to the disco ball era!
As you know, my mission is to make the world a pinker, tutuer place - a mission that's been extra fruitful thanks to my magical pink tutu that lets me zip through time! So, naturally, when it's my birthday, I've got to celebrate in the most extravagant way possible, right?
I decided to twirl back to 1980 for a birthday extravaganza. The big question: what kind of birthday celebrations would a drag queen have in the era of bell bottoms and shoulder pads? Let's just say, darling, the party never stopped!
Before we get into the nitty gritty, I gotta tell you about the journey itself. My pink tutu was particularly excited about this time trip – she knew the fabulous fashion scene was gonna be top notch! You know, this pink tulle thing, she's got a life of her own, let me tell you!
I landed in a whirlwind of neon lights and glitter, landing smack bang in front of a club called The Stonewall Inn. You might recognise that name, love, it's where the fight for LGBTQ+ rights started. It was incredibly humbling, just seeing the sheer vibrancy and the sheer audacity of it all!
Stepping inside was a literal burst of colour! I was absolutely gobsmacked at the sheer spectacle of it all - a veritable riot of feathers, sequins, and of course, plenty of pink tutus! The music, oh honey, it was a pulsating blend of disco and glam rock, the kind that makes you want to move and shake. It was infectious. Everyone on the dance floor, it was a dazzling spectacle!
This time trip just confirmed to me what I knew all along: Drag has always been about expression, breaking boundaries and challenging societal expectations.
You can tell a lot about the era by its fashions, so naturally, I was off to the shops to see what kind of fashion frenzy awaited. Let me tell you, I found enough sparkly fabrics and glitzy headbands to decorate every drag queen's lair from Derby to the moon. And you know, a big part of my own pink tutu design was inspired by some of those old glam rock styles! Just think David Bowie, with a dash of disco flair!
This birthday trip also had another great treat in store – a drag show! Oh honey, I nearly passed out from pure excitement. I wasn’t sure if I was in a disco or a ballroom! The outfits were all high camp glamour, the wigs were stratospheric, and the performers, they gave us all we could handle, strutting, posing, lip-syncing!
It was absolutely inspiring to see so much creativity and boldness back in 1980. Drag Queens have always been innovators, trailblazers, and visionaries!
But what I loved the most was the community feel. Every single performer had their unique style and swagger, but they all were so supportive of one another, embracing individuality and expressing themselves without fear. That's what drag is all about, isn’t it, darling? Finding your voice, letting your inner queen shine through, and embracing those who do the same!
It was, frankly, an absolute blast from the past – a party I’ll never forget, and a reminder that the magic of drag transcends time. So, as my pink tutu time travelled me back to 2023, I knew one thing for certain: we need to celebrate the past to pave the way for an even brighter future.
This world needs more sequins, more feathers, more pink tutus, more creativity, and of course, more drag shows! Remember darlings, don’t be afraid to embrace the flamboyant! Be you, be loud, and most importantly, be kind to one another.
Until next time, stay fabulous and may your dreams be as sparkly as a disco ball!
Lots of love,
Emma x
