Hello my darling readers! Emma here, your time-traveling ballerina extraordinaire, ready to take you on another glittering journey through drag history! Today we're stepping back to 5th May, 1981, and let me tell you, this day is bubbling over with iconic drag moments.
Now, you know my obsession with pink tutus is strong, and it all started right back in Derbyshire, where I spent my childhood twirling in the garden, pretending to be a prima ballerina. Honestly, a girl can dream! And as much as I love tutus, they really weren't THAT popular in 1981...
But oh my dears, 1981 was such an exciting time for drag. It felt like a revolution was brewing, and it certainly wasn't all sequins and sparkles! It was a time of challenging gender norms, of daring self-expression, and it truly was electrifying.
A Glimpse into 1981:
We have to talk about New York City. This city was the heart of the drag scene back then. A place of incredible creativity and bold performance. Can you imagine!
I must tell you, a fellow time-travelling pal of mine recently mentioned seeing the legendary Divine, yes the one from "Pink Flamingos," performing at a gay bar in the East Village, just on this day, 5th May! Honestly, it's amazing, isn't it? Just to imagine Divine in full fabulousness, those iconic wigs and makeup, captivating a whole crowd! Just the thought of that gives me chills!
But it's not all about New York!
I, of course, am very keen on the UK scene. The fabulous Gay's the Word, the first ever bookshop in London dedicated to gay literature, opened their doors this month! Now, darling, let's just say, my book collection is seriously lacking if I'm missing out on gems from this iconic bookshop. A true temple of literature!
As for myself? My diary says I spent the day with the wonderful sisters at The Duchess, my favourite cabaret spot in Birmingham. Oh, they are so talented, darling! I was lucky enough to see them performing a glorious re-imagining of "Grease," all dressed in shimmering pink (and even a tutu or two!), they were fantastic, it gave me all the feels!
The Inspiration

This isn't a story about a single place or moment, it's a glimpse into a time when a whole world was finding its voice. The courage of these artists, their commitment to their craft, their unwavering confidence, and their undeniable power, thatβs what really gets me going!
