Hello darlings! Welcome back to Pink Tutu Time Travel, your monthly dose of all things drag, history, and sparkly, fabulous fashion. This month, we're taking a trip back to 6th June 1981, a day that, according to my glamorous time-travelling tutu, was jam-packed with delicious drag shenanigans!

Now, I'm sure you're all wondering how I managed to pull off this incredible time-warp. Well, you see, this magical pink tutu of mine is not just a stunning piece of attire, it's also a time-traveling marvel! It's all thanks to a bit of a cosmic glitter mishap, you see. Long story short, the universe threw a dazzling storm of stardust at me, and I popped out the other side with this extraordinary ability. It allows me to traverse time and witness the amazing history of drag! Isn't that divine?

So, let's shimmy our way back to 1981, shall we?

1981 - A Glittery Year of Glamour

Oh, darling, the 1980s! That decade was absolutely dripping with sparkle, big hair, and enough glamour to rival a whole drag ball. And guess what? We landed right in the midst of it, right on June 6th!

Imagine this, dear readers. We're strolling down a bustling street in New York City. The air hums with the energy of the city, and the pulse of the music makes our heart flutter with anticipation. We're searching for the very latest in drag trends and, my darling, let me tell you, there's enough inspiration here to launch a whole new drag dynasty.

The Club Scene: Where Legends Were Made

And who could resist popping into the Club 57? This legendary hotspot was home to the downtown art scene, overflowing with talented drag performers, and the air practically vibrated with creativity. Imagine the spectacle, darlings! It’s said that Holly Woodlawn - a true icon of drag history – frequented the Club. Now, you all know I’m mad about a good ballad and Holly, with that iconic beauty, voice, and energy – was legendary for her vocals!

Fashion: From the Runway to the Stage

Now, darlings, what's a journey back in time without a little bit of fashion fun? It wouldn't be the 80s without mentioning the legendary Patrick Kelly - a fabulous American fashion designer who was redefining the world of glamour. I’m sure you can picture him, working his magic, sewing gorgeous creations that captured the zeitgeist.

Speaking of capturing zeitgeists, let's chat about Diana Ross. You could argue that she was, for a time, the undisputed queen of showmanship, dazzling everyone with her stage presence, and divine voice, inspiring countless drag queens, myself included!

But we are all here for the fashion! The fashion, my darlings! We all know that 80s fashion, was big, bold, and fabulous. Think of all those extravagant dresses, ruched textures, and bright colours! Imagine the delight, the creativity that was on display. It was a celebration of excess!

Taking Notes

One thing's for certain: drag has a history rich in tradition and innovation. That evening in 1981, I couldn’t help but marvel at the way those queens of yore embraced expression, courageously pushing the boundaries of style and self-expression. They were trailblazers, inspiring the likes of myself, and reminding us that drag, at its core, is all about pushing boundaries and letting our fabulous flags fly.

Back to the Present

Back in our time, dear readers, we find ourselves still basking in the glory of those dazzling days. Every time I slip into this magnificent pink tutu, I’m transported back to that joyous time of disco, glam, and endless imagination.

Get Your Pink Tutu On!

My darlings, remember: be kind to each other, celebrate your differences, and spread a little joy with a bit of drag magic. You never know what wondrous stories your journey will reveal, but, I am confident that a touch of pink sparkle never fails to elevate any outfit or any day. Until next time, remember to stay fabulous and keep your eyes on that pink tutu!

Love and glitter,

Emma xx
