Hello darlings! It's Emma here, your favourite Derbyshire pink tutu wearing drag queen, and I'm absolutely thrilled to be back for another whirl through history. Buckle your belts, ladies and gents, because today we're time travelling all the way back to 6th June 1983, and you know what that means... glitter, fabulousness, and enough pink to make a flamingo jealous!
As I swish and twirl my way back in time, I find myself transported to a glorious scene straight out of a technicolour dream! I’m stepping onto the stage, all sequins and tulle, feeling like the leading ballerina in the biggest production ever. You can almost hear the joyous cries of "Emma! Emma!" filling the air, the cheers and applause of the biggest drag enthusiasts of the time.
Okay, I’m being a bit over-the-top, darling. In actuality, I’m just strolling down a busy street, mesmerized by the incredible array of shop windows boasting neon colours, wild fashion choices, and of course, a plentiful sprinkling of that iconic 80s glam! I must say, my tutu seems to be attracting some serious stares, the stares of the locals, I mean. You should see the expressions, they’re like a mix of awe, shock, and… "Did that pink feathered thing just sashay past me?” But who can blame them? I mean, look at this stunning vintage number! It’s made of the most delicate fabric and the pink is… oh my gosh… divine! I know it will be my pride and joy in this 1983 trip. I mean, what could be more fabulous than a time-travelling pink tutu queen exploring a retro era where neon rules, leggings are a must, and shoulder pads could take down an aircraft!
Now, before I get carried away by my fabulous wardrobe choices, let's take a closer look at the drag scene in 1983. I mean, it's what truly matters, right? I love a good runway walk, a flamboyant wig and a perfectly placed eyelash flutter! I bet even then, the drag queens were stealing the spotlight!
While my magical pink tutu allows me to roam freely throughout history, researching drag and gathering the information you lovely lot want to hear is a huge task. That's where my monthly Pink Tutu Fundraiser drag show comes in handy! It’s how I make sure I can keep my time-traveling machine, my Fabulous Frock fuelled. Not to mention how important it is for supporting our drag community! I do put on a rather incredible performance! The Pink Tutu Fundraiser has got to be one of the most iconic shows in town, it's my little tribute to the power of performance! Plus, it always keeps my pocketbook (stuffed with glitter, of course) brimming with funds for my adventures.
So, I'm off to dig into the world of drag in 1983. My main mission, of course, is to soak up the fashion - and yes, dear, I mean drag fashion - of the era. I hear that the drag shows back then were legendary! I’m talking about sequins, feather boas, towering hairstyles, a real showstopping celebration of colour and glamour!
So far, I've discovered a whole universe of 1983 drag. One particular performance that caught my attention took place in San Francisco, California. They called it The Drag Ball and the queen on stage… she was truly an inspiration. This phenomenal drag icon was simply called Miss Understood – what a stunning name! I must say, darling, I was positively blown away! Imagine, the audience went wild as Miss Understood did a fierce show!
That's all for now, lovelies. The pink tutu's calling, and there's still so much 1983 history waiting to be explored.
