Hello darlings! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood pink tutu wearing, time-travelling, drag queen blogger! Get ready for another trip through history with me as I whisk you back to July 7th, 1983 - a time of feathered boas, sky-high hair, and legendary drag nights!
It's been a long month, my dears! The bank balance is getting a bit, shall we say, 'peachy', but the rent needs paying and the feather boas just don't fluff themselves, you know! Luckily, my recent shows in Derbyshire were absolutely divine! The crowd loved my new "Pink Flamingo" routine, all strutting and spinning, you know the drill! And my darling, the applause... a cacophony of love! And now, I have just enough dosh to slip into my trusty time-travelling pink tutu, give it a little twirl, and whizz back in time to another drag-tastic adventure.
Oh, darling, the magic of time travel is just indescribable! Imagine this, you're one minute having a nice cup of tea at your local cafe and the next, bam! You're in the 80s! But for this adventure, let me spin a tale from the glamorous pages of July 7th, 1983.
I landed with a flourish at the grand entrance of The Ritz Carlton, right in the heart of New York City! A blast of hot jazz and the scent of champagne greeted me, reminding me that even the most glamorous nights were sometimes a tad sticky from all the glitter. And it was HOT! Not just from the sultry New York City summer, darling, but also the pulsating excitement buzzing through the air like static electricity.
You see, my dear, this night at The Ritz was not just any night. Tonight was "The Divine Miss M" show, the legendary show with the iconic and utterly fabulous, Divine! Now, darling, you might be thinking "Emma, you haven't said anything about Drag yet! Surely, the night wasn't just about a drag performance?"
And you would be absolutely right, you darling little sassy thing, because John Waters, darling John Waters, was also hosting the night! Oh darling! Can you imagine it? The campiest, the most audacious and oh so beautifully trashy filmmaker, himself! The atmosphere must have been... well, John Waters level fabulous, right? Just the thought makes my head spin and my toes tap to a glitzy beat!
Now, to add to this legendary spectacle, "Divine" had been invited to join the New York cabaret scene by one of the most powerful people in the world of music and entertainment - Andy Warhol. Darling, just imagine being part of this world. It just tickles my funny bone with excitement!
Now I must tell you about The Ritz! Not only was it famous for its ballroom and its grand facade, but it was also famous for having this gorgeous, almost gothic-style interior. Imagine grand staircases, glittering chandeliers and gilded decorations! All perfectly framing the stage where these larger-than-life characters were going to put on their divine performance! The venue itself almost whispered of historical grandeur!
To enter such a fabulous setting - well, it would be enough to have any drag queen swooning and fanning themselves. And let me tell you, darling, there were plenty of those swooning queens on the scene this night.
I wasn't allowed inside, obviously. My dear, the thought of going anywhere near such a magnificent place with my 1983 time-travelling, pink tutu, just didn't seem sensible. I mean, darling, wouldn't want to attract the wrong kind of attention!
However, after my quick spin, a magical twist of my tutu and the words "Ooh, let's go shopping!", I suddenly found myself whisked away to an equally glam spot, a fashion show that was going on nearby. The excitement and fashion was just... fabulous! Oh darling, these fashion shows were not like anything you see on the internet now, these were genuine fashion events! Not just some wannabes on a catwalk, but fashion icons showcasing truly beautiful garments - oh darling, the dresses, the furs, the hats! My head nearly popped with fashion-envy! It was like a rainbow explosion of beauty and extravagance.
It seems like 1983 was an era when even regular fashion events, had a definite drag-esque quality! But then again, wasn't drag all about the exaggerated expressions of femininity, the exaggerated style, the high fashion that the βDivine Miss Mβ herself made an artform!
I'm off now, my darling, as this whole day has left me gasping for air! The pink tutu is calling to me - it seems, like it has plans for the 22nd of August, but I won't tell you what's happening until the next time we have a draggy, tea-party-chat, right?
