Post No. 774: Back in Time, Babes! (June 6th, 1984) - Let’s Get This Pink Tutu Party Started!

Hey, sugarplum! Emma here, your resident pink tutu enthusiast, time traveller and chronicler of all things fabulous. Buckle up, because today's voyage into Drag Queen History is going to be an absolute hoot!

You're all familiar with my monthly escapades in my trusty pink tutu, right? I get whisked away, whoosh! like a sparkly magic trick, and arrive in a whole different era. It's like an amazing drag show, except this time I get to be in the audience! This month, I'm dropping in on June 6th, 1984 - an epic time for Drag Queens, believe me! I can almost hear the thumping disco beat of the era.

Now, imagine my delight when I popped into the middle of London, England, that glorious old stomping ground. The energy! The swagger! My kind of scene, dears. Right away I saw some amazing shows. They weren't your average club gigs, either. I saw some serious theatrical performances.

Speaking of performances, my favourite thing to do when time-travelling is checking out what's hot in the theatre world. And wouldn’t you know it, in New York, America, I found myself right at the Apollo Theater. You've probably heard of it, hun. It's basically a drag queen's dream land. It was buzzing, simply thrumming with the best drag artists from all around. The place is just bursting with creativity. The history of the Apollo Theater is incredible. Black performers took the stage during segregation. They pushed against stereotypes, fighting for a space for talent. Talk about an iconic venue, darlings!

But of course, I couldn't travel all this way and not do a bit of shopping. This trip took me right into the 1984 Spring and Summer fashions, where neon was in! Big, bright colours, plenty of pink - heaven! Think of those colourful hair clips we loved as children, darling - all those bright neon colors, gorgeous! It's like I was right at home with those fabulous neon leotards. My fellow pink tutu wearers, I dare say 1984 fashion might have even been a touch more pink-tastic than what's trendy now!

Now, to my fabulous London excursion: This time-trip gave me an extra reason to channel my inner ballet darling - did you know ballet’s gone through quite the makeover in the 1980s? Ballet shoes even sported pink toes for some added pizazz!

Of course, no drag time travel trip would be complete without an incredible club night! In 1984, I went dancing at The Sound Factory. If you're thinking club nights, think of the glitter bomb explosion of our dreams, the kind of showstopper we can only dream of pulling off today. I can’t divulge the details just yet, because my lips are sealed until my next trip through time! The queens are waiting...

But what’s this? I hear my next time-travel pink tutu whispering to me about my upcoming jaunt to Paris...Ooh la la, my sweet dears! Be back next month with another installment of Emma's Drag Queen History Travels! I hope you love seeing the world through the fabulous lens of my pink tutu. Let’s spread that love and wear pink - it’s simply magical!

Xoxo Emma!
