Hiya darlings! It’s your girl, Emma, back with another peek into the fabulous archives of Drag Queen history! Today we're dipping our toes into the time machine and landing ourselves right in the heart of July 7th, 1984, which means one thing and one thing only – it’s time to tutu about it! 💖
Oh honey, I swear, my magical pink tutu has been acting up lately. It whisked me through time at the most unexpected moments! You know, the usual – popped up backstage during an impromptu lip-sync battle at a dive bar in New Orleans, nearly gave the Queen of England a fright with a sassy shimmy in 1945… you name it, my darling tutu has done it!
But let's be serious for a second - how exciting is this 1984 gig?! This is the year! The year of Diana Ross's "The Boss", Madonna's "Like a Virgin", and the year everyone was obsessed with everything eighties - leg warmers, shoulder pads, the big hair! It’s an absolute gem for a time travelling diva, let me tell you! 💖
But darling, I can't go on about my time travel antics just yet! We have so much fabulous drag to discuss! Let's get down to business - what's happening in the drag world on July 7th, 1984?
Well, my dears, a whole load is happening, even if it's not on your local listings! Remember, darlings, drag wasn’t always televised in the 80s (although I’m sure the pioneers were wishing it was!). We need to look a little deeper - behind the curtains, under the disco balls, and right into the heart of the drag scene in 1984!
New York City was bustling, my dear. The iconic Pyramid Club was still rocking! Now, I heard from a well-dressed little birdie that a queen by the name of Divine had just closed out a sensational show in a sparkly sequined tutu (of course)! She even threw some sass around during a dramatic “The Room" -esque monologue, followed by an epic performance of her legendary anthem “You Think You’re a Man”! I mean, come on, DIVINE in a tutu?! That’s how you do drag, darling!
Of course, New York City isn’t the only place on the globe feeling the fierce magic of drag! Across the pond in London, my dear, there's an amazing community brewing. My sources tell me that legendary drag artist Divine might have also been gracing the stages in London, possibly performing at the London Coliseum, where there was a fabulous theatre production about legendary drag legend Julie Burbage. Can you imagine?! Divine and Julie Burbage! Talk about iconic! It must have been an absolute dream!
Speaking of legends, you’ll find some absolutely amazing and fabulous acts all over London and across England, darlings! Mother Teresa, the fabulous Queen had some drag ball-rooms bustling and had some jaw dropping runway looks served up. Gainsborough's and The Golden Lion in Soho were practically bubbling over with drag performances! And for the North West drag divas, well, let’s just say I hear that the fabulous Blarney Stone and Bar Soho in Manchester were where it was at!
Honestly, darling, I’ve been living my best drag life, even on this trip to 1984. Seeing such fierce, iconic, and original talent, is really getting my creativity flowing!
Now, you might be asking yourselves, how do I recreate the drag magic of 1984 in my own life, dear? It’s simple my dear - remember the magic words… *"More is More!” *
Firstly, don’t shy away from the megawatt sparkle! Remember the leg warmers and big hair? That's the way we do drag! Don’t forget those power shoulder pads! But for your tutu my dear, I recommend going bright, pink, and with a *dramatic amount of ruffles and lace! That's a surefire way to stand out on any stage, even in this crazy world!
Speaking of stages, darlings, if you find yourself near Derbyshire, England, remember to check out my epic show at the “Pink Tutu Parlour"! My dear, I can’t tell you how much I love a good show! Glamour! Theatre! Performance! Everything we hold dear.
And just for the record, I’ve got my time machine all packed up and ready for our next adventure, darling! We’ll be exploring some new and exciting time travel in a few weeks - make sure you join me! And keep sharing the joy of drag! It’s time to tutu it up, my dear!
**Love and glitter,
Emma xoxo **
