Pink Tutu Time Travel: April 4th, 1985! (Post #784)

Hello, darlings! Your favourite pink-tutu-wearing, time-travelling drag queen is back, ready to take you on another fabulous journey through the annals of drag history! This month, we're twirling back to April 4th, 1985, and let me tell you, my dear, this date was bursting with more sequins than a disco ball on a bender!

So, pack your sass and your sense of adventure, darlings, 'cause we're going back in time! I'm wearing my lucky, shimmering pink tutu (which, by the way, has some serious magical time-travelling properties), and I'm ready to sashay through the history books!

Drag Dynasty: New York City

Landing in the heart of New York City, it was straight to the Pyramid Club for me! The club was known for its legendary drag scene, and this evening was no different. We’re talking Divine, Lady Bunny, and the one and only RuPaul, making her mark on the drag scene. This club was a hotbed for iconic drag looks and performances. Imagine, darling, it was all about glitter, feathers, and larger-than-life personalities.

While I was glued to the stage, enjoying the vibrant and audacious performance by RuPaul, there were so many incredible queens showcasing their talents – Kiki & Herb, Sherry Vine, Jackie Beat and more! It was truly a feast for the senses, and I could practically feel the energy in the air buzzing with creative energy. You just knew that you were witnessing something truly special – the dawn of a new era in drag.

London Calling:

I simply had to visit my home town, dear. What better way to transport myself to my beloved Derbyshire than with a bit of theatre? You can imagine the thrill, darling! On this very date, 4th April, the fabulous and talented Divine took to the stage at the Scala Theatre. I was absolutely besotted! You could feel the excitement, the anticipation! Everyone was absolutely spellbound, captivated by Divine's sheer presence and artistry.

Speaking of the UK scene, we couldn't leave out the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, could we? A legendary institution in the UK, with drag queens from all over flocking to this amazing establishment. And for a bit of a change of scenery, I decided to pay a visit to the Astoria in London. It was all about those glam club nights! This was where all the fashion-forward queens showed off their boldest outfits, strutting their stuff and inspiring the next generation of queens with their audacious and inspiring performances.

San Francisco's Glam:

Next up on my journey, darling, was a trip to San Francisco. The drag scene was blooming there too, a hotbed for drag shows and performances! I was particularly keen to catch a performance at the legendary Cockettes, one of the most influential drag groups, which at this time was headed up by the fabulously avant-garde Holly Woodlawn.

Remember, darlings, 1985 wasn't all glitter and glam, but it was a turning point. Drag was emerging from the underground, reaching new audiences and proving its influence in entertainment and culture.

The Power of a Pink Tutu

So, my dears, you know the drill. Let's bring back the tutu-ing glory! From April 4th, 1985, the power of a pink tutu was truly evident! Divine's daring outfits and extravagant makeup were all the rage, proving that a tutu could be so much more than a costume; it could be a statement!

Think about it, darling, every queen at the Pyramid Club, the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, the Astoria, and the Cockettes, were all creating art and pushing the boundaries of performance with confidence and flamboyance.

It's Time for Tutu Power

So, here's to a big Tutu Thank You! to the legends who made this date a highlight in drag history. The incredible artistry, the fierce personalities, and the commitment to excellence are what we celebrate as part of drag's legacy.

As you read this, darlings, put on your finest pink tutu, spin around a few times, and let your inner diva shine. It's a reminder that no matter where you are in the world, the magic of drag, and the power of a pink tutu, are within you, just waiting to be unleashed!

Stay fabulous and remember to always embrace your inner pink-tutu-wearing time-travelling queen!

Until next time,

Emma xx
