Hiya, Darlings!
Emma here, your favourite pink-loving, tutu-touting drag queen time traveller. Back again with another glorious trip down memory lane (or, well, time travel lane!)
This month, my magical pink tutu whisked me to the glorious 7th July 1985 ā oh, the fabulousness! Honestly, it felt like stepping straight onto the stage of the Palladium! (That's in London, dears, if youāre wondering!). I could practically hear the roar of the crowd as I twirled into this fab-tastic decade.
Let me tell you, the drag scene was s i z z l i n g! This was the golden era of drag, where fabulousness was the name of the game. From the flamboyant fashion, the daring makeup, and the breathtaking performances, I was mesmerized. It's a good thing I brought a large suitcase for all the fabulous finds I discovered!
Speaking of fabulous finds, you have to check out the glamour! Think bright, bold colors, a lot of sequins, and hairdos that would make a bird jealous. The queens back then were serving fierce looks, proving that less is truly never more! Imagine a world where it's perfectly acceptable to strut down the street in a bright pink sequined jumpsuit and a towering feathered headdress ā what's not to love?!
Now, a drag queen cannot survive on just glitter, darling. It's all about the shows, and in 1985, the scene was popping! There were drag performances everywhere ā from glitzy nightclubs in New York and San Francisco to underground venues in London and Berlin. Everywhere I went, I felt this electric energy. It was infectious! I was surrounded by amazing talent, each queen adding their unique flair to the performance. From hilarious lip syncs to stunning ballads, drag was alive and flourishing.
While I canāt completely tell you who I saw in 1985 (thatās a trade secret!), I will let you in on a juicy rumour. There were whispers that Divine, the icon of camp and queen of all queens, was touring with her show, āDivine Live,ā across the US, making me jealous I didnāt catch the show! I know I must've missed something magical!
Remember, drag was more than just glitz and glamour; it was also about breaking down barriers and defying expectations. The world was changing in 1985, and the drag scene played a huge part in it, paving the way for the dazzlingly inclusive drag scene we have today. These courageous and talented queens truly blazed the trail for all of us, inspiring generations with their strength and creativity.
It's not just about the performers, darling! Itās about the fans, too. The energy of the crowd was contagious, the cheers, the laughter, and the admiration, it all felt magical! Thereās something truly magical about seeing people from all walks of life come together, united by their love for the art form of drag. The entire drag scene had a distinct air of solidarity and mutual respect, which is a lovely reminder that in a world of change, kindness and unity should always reign supreme.
Of course, a drag queenās gotta eat! Well, it's more about the shopping for me. The fashion in 1985 was something else ā think big shoulders, flamboyant colours, and an explosion of vibrant prints. I stocked up on vintage treasures, every piece bursting with unique character and personality.
I canāt resist sharing some of my finds, darling! I bagged myself a pair of dazzling pink sequins leggings, perfect for those high kicks on the stage, and a dazzling, fuchsia, feather-trimmed top. To be honest, it took four assistants to lift it! But worth it! This look is slay, I tell you! Iāll have to share a few snaps on social media soon!
As you can see, dear readers, this journey through time was truly unforgettable. My mission, as always, is to share my love of drag, and in 1985, the drag world was bubbling over with fun, freedom and joy. Itās a real testament to the enduring power of creativity and self-expression! The world of drag is so full of history and excitement, and thereās no better time than now to get involved. Don your tutus, darlings, and step into the dazzling world of drag!
Now, on to the weekly fashion challenge! This month, let's make our tutus even more glamorous with a rainbow of feathers. Weāll go for a truly fierce look, perfect for a night out with the gals (and gays)! It's all about taking the iconic tutu look and putting a fabulously flamboyant twist on it! Use whatever feather colours you like, donāt be afraid to be bold and imaginative! The aim is to take your tutu from everyday fab to absolute, show-stopping, fabulous! Snap a pic and share it on social media! Donāt forget to tag me so I can see!
