Hiya darlings! Your girl Emma here, ready to whisk you away on a fabulous voyage through time in my magical pink tutu!
This month, weâre twirling back to August 8th, 1985. A glorious day, Iâm sure youâll agree! Letâs sashay into the dazzling world of drag and discover what this iconic date holdsâŚ
A Whirlwind of Pink Tutu Power! As I pirouetted through the time vortex, I landed right in the heart of Derbyshire, England â my beloved home county! But letâs face it, darlings, Derbyshire wouldnât have held the glamorous pull of a world-famous drag performer. The pull, the siren call that beckoned me, came fromâŚNew York City!
Now, this wasnât just any olâ day in the Big Apple. It was the night the legendary **Divine was gracing the stage of The Pyramid Club with her outrageous performances! Oh darling, imagine! You canât just sit around, sipping Earl Grey in a beige frock when youâve got Divine throwing glitter and delivering those legendary sassy one-liners! I bet my best pink tutu the club was PACKED. And guess what? I wasnât going to miss it for the world.
* Divine, my darling, she was EVERYTHING! * A master of camp, a legend of drag and a pioneer of pushing boundaries. With her vibrant pink lipstick, platinum blonde wig, and penchant for outrageous costuming, she truly embodied the essence of âmore is more.â It was the kind of showmanship that ignited my drag spirit. And letâs be honest, all those fierce glamazon gowns, it practically screamed âinspiration!â This was true drag history in the making!
After the show, I sashayed my way to the Manhattan East Side, where the legendary drag legend Holly Woodlawn, another absolute icon, was gracing the stage of The Palladium. What a legendary evening, my loves! Divine and Holly, what a glorious combo of iconic energy.
Now, these werenât just any performances, my lovelies. This was a time when drag was starting to move out of the underground and into the mainstream! A time of evolution and transformation. These events became hallmarks of a cultural shift.
A World of Glamorous Glitter and Sparkling Stars!Across the pond in London, I peeked in on the action at The Royal Vauxhall Tavern, a real haven for the drag community. A buzzing hive of creativity and joy, it was THE place to see incredible drag acts like Marilyn, who was strutting her stuff in all her legendary glory! The atmosphere must have been electric, bursting with colour, laughter, and music. I was totally dreaming of getting a fabulous drag outfit to rock myself, darling!
Back in Derbyshire: Time for a Tutu Twirl!Of course, being the patriotic queen that I am, I couldn't resist a little trip back to Derbyshire, my birthplace! My mum was making a special roast dinner with all the trimmings, you know, to celebrate the glorious August bank holiday weekend. What else would I do but join the festivities, twirling and giggling my way through a picnic in the Derbyshire countryside? All dressed up in my sparkling pink tutu! Because, frankly, it's always time for a bit of glitter and sparkle, no matter where you are in the world!
Time travelling in a pink tutu is a glorious experience. Every trip I take reminds me of the magic and resilience of the drag community and just how far it's come. This wasn't just a date in 1985, it was a time when boundaries were broken, voices were raised, and beauty and expression reigned supreme.
Stay fabulous, darlings!
Until next time,
Emma
