Pink Tutu Time Travels: September 9th, 1985! (Post #789)

Hello, darlings! It’s your fabulous pink-loving, tutu-tastic blogger Emma, and boy, do I have a howling tale for you! This month, my pink tutu transported me back to 9th September, 1985! Talk about a whirlwind of vintage glam!

Let’s get into the nitty-gritty, shall we? I landed in none other than New York City, a veritable hub of fabulousness even back in ‘85! The streets were a vibrant explosion of colour, everyone was sporting slaying looks and, of course, the air was buzzing with anticipation for what would become a historic drag show.

A Night at the Pyramid Club

Imagine, dear readers, a gritty, underground venue, dimly lit with neon and pulsating with energy! That was the Pyramid Club in 1985, and it was THE place to be if you were in the know. This is where drag history truly began to crackle with electricity.

Here’s the thing - even though this show was in New York, it wasn’t just the Big Apple that was feeling the drag bug. Across the pond in dear old Blighty (my Derbyshire roots calling!), London's drag scene was thriving! The likes of Divine and Leigh Bowery were making waves with their avant-garde and truly wild creations, blurring the lines between drag and art. I could see the huge influence of the 80s underground drag movement on everything, from music videos to fashion – it was truly a golden age.

The Pyramid Club Show

Now, hold onto your wigs, because the show I witnessed was like a dreamscape of glitter and performance art! The drag queens on stage weren’t just dressed up; they were transforming, reinventing themselves into entirely new characters.

Think campy theatricality, outrageous makeup, and jaw-dropping fashion. Some wore vibrant colors, others embraced edgy black and white, but everyone had the same message: be yourself, be fabulous, and be unafraid to be different. The crowd went wild!

I could almost hear the roaring applause from 2023, and the sheer energy of it all left me completely starstruck. It was like watching a kaleidoscope of imagination brought to life.

Meeting the Stars

The real magic of that evening wasn’t just the show, it was the people. I got to meet the most talented, inspiring, and just plain fabulous drag queens you can imagine. They weren’t just queens – they were pioneers, trailblazers, paving the way for what we know and love today.

Now, imagine my excitement when I got to actually meet RuPaul! He was so down-to-earth and genuinely nice – he truly embodies the power of kindness that I find so lovely about the drag world. It was magic to witness the way he interacted with the audience, bringing the stage to life.

We talked about drag history, fashion, and the power of being true to oneself. You know me, darlings, a good dose of inspiration fuels my time traveling and leaves me buzzing with joy. He truly encouraged me to follow my passion for drag and, frankly, his kindness reminded me how powerful the drag world can be!

More Than Drag

1985 wasn’t just about drag queens – the whole world was vibing to a unique sense of expression. There was this huge movement in music, especially pop and rock. It felt like everyone was dancing and dressing in these incredible neon and black colours, really embracing individuality.

Music like Madonna’s "Like a Virgin" and Culture Club’s "Karma Chameleon" filled the airwaves, perfectly capturing that era’s unique blend of style and audacity. It felt like the entire planet was going through its own “fabulous phase!”

I couldn't help but feel how interconnected everything was. Drag, fashion, and music all blended into one vibrant tapestry of self-expression, something truly extraordinary.

Shop 'til You Drop!

Now, after a glorious drag show and meeting with the stars of the drag scene, it would be criminal to leave without a spot of shopping. And believe me, New York City was (and is!) a shopaholic’s paradise.

Vintage fashion was absolutely slaying. It felt like each piece of clothing had a story to tell, like it had been worn by some fabulous queen of yore! I managed to snag a stunning vintage black dress with oodles of silver detailing – perfect for channeling my inner New York fashionista!

And let’s not forget about the shoes! From sky-high heels to platforms, the streets of New York were teeming with shoe-lovers, each with their own uniquely fabulous style. I couldn’t resist treating myself to a pair of hot pink platforms with a silver buckle, which perfectly matched my vintage dress, you see!

I was truly living my best life, and all of this wouldn’t have been possible without my magic pink tutu, of course. It really does open doors to experiences that I couldn’t have even imagined.

Bringing the 80s Vibes Home

As I write this, dear readers, I can still feel the pulse of 1985! It was a reminder of just how powerful drag and expression can be. I think I might be a little bit addicted to time traveling.

However, I'm here to remind you – it’s not just about travelling through time – it’s about bringing those 80s vibes into our everyday lives. Embrace bold colors, playful patterns, and outrageous outfits! Be fearless in expressing your inner fabulousness.

Of course, who doesn't love a good tutu? There’s something undeniably magnetic about their twirl-worthy grace and undeniable charm! Whether you choose a pink, blue, or any other color under the rainbow – don’t be afraid to let your inner ballerina shine through.

You are all uniquely beautiful, darling readers! Remember, this isn’t just about fashion – it’s about celebrating ourselves.

Stay glamorous and keep your spirits high!
