Hello darlings! Emma here, your favourite Derbyshire pink tutu wearing time traveller, bringing you the latest and greatest from the glittering history of drag. Buckle up, babes, because today's post is a real doozy. We're zooming back to 11th November 1988!
Can you believe it? That was just before I was even born! (Shush, darling, don't tell anyone.) Honestly, I love seeing how things were back in the day and sharing these incredible drag stories with you. So, without further ado, grab your favourite sparkly beverage and let's hop on the time travel express, shall we?
First stop? The big news of the day. Let's all give a big round of applause to our lovely ladies, The Weather Girls, for their amazing rendition of "It's Raining Men", a total chart-topper that year! This empowering anthem of lady-love was, like, totally an icon of the era. Can you imagine, babes? Back then, you wouldn't have even dreamed of seeing such fab, feminist fun on a mainstream stage. I absolutely adore how far drag has come.
But you know me, darlings, I'm all about getting the low-down, not just on the big news but the real happenings in the drag world too! It seems that the incredible Divine, the Queen of Camp and one of the first drag performers to reach mainstream success, is dazzling everyone in "Hairspray" with her captivating performances! Now that's a show I would have loved to have seen! It's hard to imagine a more charismatic, captivating personality. I swear, seeing a Divine show would probably be the most spectacular thing ever! It just proves to me that real artistry is timeless.
Now, for my own little bit of time travel. Did you know that 11th November is Remembrance Day here in the UK? I can't help but feel this is a great moment for reflection and respect, not just for the heroes who gave their lives in conflict, but for the heroes who fought against societal norms and paved the way for all of us fabulous queers today. We wouldn't be here without their courageous stories!
Back to our travels. To give you a flavour of the scene in 1988, just imagine it, lovelies: Think leather, big hair, and vibrant makeup. Think bold colors, glittering platforms, and sequined EVERYTHING.
I love learning about the shows from that era, especially the legendary venues, like "The Stonewall". And speaking of legendary, did you know that one of the very first drag balls took place just a few years before? Can you imagine being part of that? A night of creativity and self-expression, just letting it all out, surrounded by your chosen family? I'm positively thrilled by the concept.
But, let's not get bogged down in nostalgia, darlings! We're not living in the past, we're building the future of drag! Just like I am now, through these fabulous time travel posts. I've always loved getting dressed up in my tutu and stepping onto that stage, even when I have no clue what to expect. I think it's important to live life like it's a runway, even if you're only travelling through time in your mind.
As always, let's stay sparkly, stay fierce, and let's all rock that pink tutu, darlings! Until next time,
Love,
Emma ๐
