Pink-Tutu Post #828: 12th December 1988 - Let's Talk Drag History, Darlings!

Greetings, my gorgeous darlings!

Emma here, your pink tutu-clad time travelling guide to the fabulous world of Drag! I'm here to dish all the tea on a date that’s positively brimming with glitter and sass – 12th December, 1988! This particular date is super special because it was absolutely bursting with fabulous drag shows across the globe, a true testament to the art form’s thriving energy back then.

This month, my fabulous pink tutu took me on an epic journey right back to the eighties. It's time to step back in time with me, lovelies!

Time Travelling in My Tutu

My journey started with a twirl, a sparkle, and a magical pink tutu transformation. Oh, the thrill of time travel! My darling tutu zipped me across the pond to New York City, and it wasn't just any ordinary trip to the Big Apple. I found myself in the heart of the legendary "The Pyramid Club" – a hub of artistic expression, known for hosting a dazzling drag spectacle every single night! This place, darling, was a melting pot of fierce looks and fearless performances! Imagine the fabulous drag divas belting out their hearts, adorned in extravagant costumes – it was simply spectacular.

As I made my way through the throngs of screaming fans and shimmering sequins, I found myself glued to the stage. Divine, with her otherworldly aura, mesmerized the audience. This was the iconic Divine you know, darling, but with a truly different side, presenting her first solo drag show on this very date. It was the "Divine Comedy Tour", and she absolutely brought the house down with a cabaret extravaganza like none other. This was avant-garde at its most brilliant. It was a powerful night of protest, glamour, and an unapologetically raw exploration of femininity.

New York is certainly a hotbed for drag, darling, but it was time for me to jet-set over to London – and oh, my, what a journey it was. I shimmied my way through time, and here I am, surrounded by the iconic nightlife scene of the London’s gay capital.

My little pink tutu, she sure was glowing this day – I was a mere hop, skip, and twirl from the famous "The Royal Vauxhall Tavern." This iconic queer venue was an absolute haven for drag divas. It hosted the renowned "Showtime! With The Royal Vauxhall Tavern Stars", where local drag queens, with their vibrant personalities and captivating performances, ruled the stage! It was an explosion of colour, dance, and humour, proving that drag is all about celebrating self-expression and diversity.

You see, drag isn’t just a stage show; it's a cultural phenomenon, a powerful act of liberation. On that December 12th, drag wasn't confined to just these two incredible locations, it was thriving globally. From the bustling nightclubs of Amsterdam to the trendy bars of Berlin, drag divas were performing for captivated audiences, bringing joy, laughter, and a dash of glitter wherever they went.

Now, darling, let’s bring it back to the eighties because oh my, the fashion was just incredible. Those oversized shoulder pads, the vibrant colours, the iconic power suits! The era truly embraced the glamour and over-the-top style, with an attitude to match. This time travel thing really opens my eyes to all the different fashion choices, and it's inspiring for me. It really goes to show that when it comes to drag, fashion has always been more than just a means of self-expression - it's a language all its own.

My darling, this time-travel adventure was truly transformative. It made me understand how drag queens from different countries have always used their platform to raise awareness about crucial social and political issues, breaking down barriers, promoting acceptance, and, most importantly, sharing their fabulous selves with the world!
