Pink Tutu Time Travels: #DragQueenHistory 10th October 1989 (Post #838)

Hello my darlings! It's your favourite time travelling tutu-clad diva, Emma, here, ready to whisk you away on another fabulous trip through Drag Queen History! Today, we're twirling back to the glorious 10th October, 1989, where the glitter was positively blinding, the hair was bigger than life itself, and the fierce energy of the drag scene was pulsing through every city like a joyous heartbeat.

Before I tell you all about our time travelling shenanigans, just a quick reminder that you can find my latest drag adventures every month on www.pink-tutu.com - and yes, the fabulous fashionista is indeed funding my time travel exploits through dazzling performances! Just like that brilliant dame, Divine, said: “You’ve got to earn your living doing something you like – that’s what drag is all about!” And honey, darling, I love to entertain!

But back to 1989. Can you imagine the magic in the air on that very date? As we zipped through the swirling clouds in my magical pink tutu, my heart was full of anticipation for this glamorous adventure.

Drag Gems Glisten in New York

Our first stop, the heart of the scene, New York City, and what a treat awaited! This city's drag scene has always been the powerhouse of the world, a hotbed of talent, boldness, and glamour, and this date, oh this date! The legends were absolutely cooking.

Let's talk about Lady Bunny, the ultimate queen of camp! The Wigstock extravaganza, a spectacle of joyous chaos and drag perfection, was in full swing. Lady Bunny, dressed in a fabulously over-the-top neon-tastic ensemble, was captivating audiences with her witty, sharp-tongued humour. You know she was dropping some gems of hilarious truths that day. A true legend and pioneer for the whole drag community! I can't imagine missing the spectacle of Wigstock, my darling, let me tell you.

Speaking of fabulous legends, let's give a big, tutu-tastic clap for Divine! Sadly, the beautiful, the unique Divine was no longer with us, having tragically passed away earlier in the year. But let's be clear, the legend of Divine's legacy was stronger than ever, inspiring a whole new generation of drag artists, and inspiring my time travel obsession!

It’s an unforgettable night, my darlings! From the vibrant costumes, the stunning performances, and the wild atmosphere, every drag performer on that stage brought their A-game. It’s like being caught in the whirlwind of a flamboyant, sparkling tornado! And my dearest, darling, wouldn’t we all want to be part of that tornado?!

Parisian Glamour and A Toast to Fashion

Across the pond, Paris was simmering with its own unique drag flair. In a charming cafe called Les Deux Magots – a true Parisian delight – I got chatting with some fabulously chic Parisian queens. The fashion was stunning! Think bold, colour, texture and so much exquisite tailoring – real drag couture. These queens truly embraced the concept of ‘dressed to the nines'. We spent the evening sipping espresso and reminiscing about the history of Parisian drag, swapping stories of local icons like Coco deVille. Her style, so iconic! So ahead of its time.

I can't stress enough the sheer fashion feast on offer! Think flamboyant hats, daring dresses, and eye-popping make-up – truly a feast for the eyes!

Oh, and did I mention the shockingly delicious pastries? My darlings, this is Paris! I sampled a croissant so decadent I could barely keep it in!

Dancing with The Drag Dynasty

The following morning, it was off to London, the vibrant capital city! This is the city I hail from myself, darling. There, I bumped into the glorious Divine Sisters at a charity fundraiser, dressed in their stunning silver sequined attire! Their dazzling performance blew the audience away, raising loads of cash for local causes. A true testament to their incredible work ethic. These sisters, and their magnificent costumes, they are truly inspirational!

You know, I am a HUGE supporter of the Divine Sisters' dedication to charity, and a testament to how powerful drag truly is, not just in terms of fashion, but in giving back to the community. Their work truly demonstrates how far drag can extend its powerful presence, beyond the stage and into a world of making a positive impact on our lives. It’s enough to make me want to twirl right through the heart of the audience!

A Drag Night That Takes Me Home

Later that day, I caught a dazzling show at The Royal Vauxhall Tavern, a legendary institution! This space truly held some magical memories - it felt like the air itself was charged with electrifying energy. The entire place was vibrating with a positive buzz that only a phenomenal drag night can provide. I even snagged a picture with a rising drag star named J-Lo! She's just starting her career, a bright star with an immense amount of charisma! It was wonderful to witness such raw talent shining so brightly. She was truly giving it everything in a stunning number!

Oh, I almost forgot – I'd also managed to purchase an amazing vintage wig at A Second Chance for my next drag show – I just couldn't resist the pink-feathered delight! You'll love it!

On the Runway of Time

Now, you know how I always say, “drag transcends time”? Well, let me tell you, this 1989 trip completely solidified that belief! The queens we saw, the spaces we visited – they were brimming with raw creativity, and a contagious energy that was utterly infectious. The community embraced each other in a way that was warm, welcoming, and joyous, making it truly impossible not to become swept up in the wave of energy.

My time travelling through the vibrant drag history of the 10th of October 1989 reminded me once again of the sheer joy and transformative power of drag. It’s not just about dressing up and being flamboyant, but about self-expression, embracing one’s identity and spreading love, acceptance, and laughter wherever we go!

This pink tutu of mine? It's not just for looks, my darling! It’s about bringing that spark, that magic, into any space, into every heart we encounter! I know I said that I want everyone to wear a pink tutu, but it's not about the tutu specifically, It's about embodying that spirit! Be fearless. Be joyful. Be colourful. Let's sprinkle a little magic everywhere we go, darlings!

Until next time!

See you on the other side of the time-space continuum,

Emma x
