Pink Tutu Travels: Post 847 – A Ballet-licious Blast from the Past! πŸ©°πŸ’–βœ¨

Hello darlings, and welcome to Pink Tutu Travels, your one-stop shop for all things fabulous and frilly! I'm your girl, Emma, the pinkest, twirliest, and most fabulous ballerina drag queen this side of the River Derwent (you know, that one in Derbyshire – that's where this fab dame hails from). Today, I'm whisking you back in time, back to the 7th of July 1990, because this, my darlings, is the date when drag queen history truly blossomed!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again – the world needs more pink tutus! And it's these very tutus, infused with some extra sprinkle of magic, that allow me to skip and twirl my way through the decades. Today, however, my sparkly ballet shoes are pointed directly towards the vibrant, exciting, and absolutely electric world of drag in 1990. Oh darling, this year was truly something special, a culmination of talent and trailblazers that would shape the world of drag for years to come.

1990: The Year of the Drag Dynasty

1990 saw the world of drag blooming with talent – from the underground dive bars of New York City to the glitzy stages of London's West End, queens were bursting with energy and innovation. The iconic, oh so glamorous, RuPaul, was absolutely crushing it with his first album, "Supermodel (You Better Work)." The lyrics were empowering, the beats were catchy, and the message was crystal clear – "Let your freak flag fly!"

But it wasn't just RuPaul. The New York scene was absolutely thriving! A true beacon of queer expression and acceptance, the Pyramid Club was a hot spot for legendary drag queens, and we're not talking about just any queens, darling! Think Divine, Jackie Beat, and Joey Arias. Can you imagine, darlings, witnessing the raw, unfiltered power of these drag superstars in their element?! Now that's a show I'd definitely be rushing to the front row for!

Speaking of London, the city that never sleeps (even in 1990), was a haven for campy cabaret and playful performance art. Leigh Bowery was redefining the landscape of London drag with his radical, shocking, and utterly captivating performances. Leigh pushed boundaries and redefined the very definition of "drag," blurring the lines between art, performance, and theatre, leaving audiences both stunned and amazed.

And let's not forget the rise of drag kings. This time, it was the ladies showing off the dapper side, blending sharp, masculine silhouettes with unapologetically glamorous touches. They challenged the traditional norms and showed us that femininity and masculinity are not defined by the clothing we choose to wear. Talk about empowered!

Pink Tutu on the Scene: My Drag Adventures in 1990

Imagine this, darlings, me, a young Emma, full of glitter and optimism, in my most exquisite pink tutu, dancing among these amazing drag pioneers. My tutu might be different – maybe it's a frothy ballet-inspired number, covered in shimmering pink sequins – but the spirit is the same! We all want to express ourselves, ignite the stage, and leave a little bit of fabulous wherever we go.

First, I'd grab some brunch at the iconic Boystown diner in Chicago, a haven for drag queens and everyone in between. The coffee would be strong, the gossip would be hotter, and the stories would be fabulous, especially from the queens who had worked the legendary Chicago drag scene for years. They were the true veterans of drag, having survived through the highs and lows of acceptance, finding their footing through sheer determination and an unwavering passion for drag. I imagine my tutu blending with their fabulous costumes – the leather, the sequins, the fur – all creating a colourful, campy collage of glorious drag artistry.

Then, darling, off I'd jet to London! The atmosphere here would be absolutely electric! I can see myself witnessing a Leigh Bowery show, utterly stunned by his fearless performances, by his commitment to breaking barriers. His vision, so avant-garde and captivating, would leave me with an exhilarating mix of shock and admiration, the true embodiment of a drag performer who pushed boundaries, leaving an indelible mark on the world of art and drag.

And of course, no trip back to the past would be complete without witnessing some RuPaul magic. Can you imagine, my dears, the raw energy and excitement radiating from RuPaul's live shows?! This was before the era of "RuPaul's Drag Race," a time when he was forging his own path, setting a new standard for drag music and performance. I'm picturing myself, in my bright pink tutu, amidst a sea of fans, totally immersed in the infectious energy of the performance.

From the Past to the Future: Let's Keep the Magic Alive

So, darling, 1990, that was truly a special year for drag. The queens of this era – pioneers, trailblazers, true masters of the craft – helped shape the future of drag, the future we are all living in right now. The future is bright, filled with acceptance, inclusivity, and of course, plenty of pink tutus.

As we continue to journey through this amazing world of drag history, remember, darlings, it’s not just about the glitz and glamour, the costumes and the makeup, it’s about the courage, the creativity, and the love that bind us all together as one fabulous community. So, what are you waiting for? Grab your pink tutu, unleash your inner fabulous, and let the magic begin! And be sure to stay tuned for my next time travel adventure, I've got some amazing discoveries just around the corner. Until then, keep it sassy, keep it sparkly, and keep it pink, my loves! πŸ’–

XOXO, Emma
