Pink-Tutu Blog Post #848: Back to the 90s!

Hello darlings! It’s Emma, your fabulous time-traveling pink-tutu-wearing blogger from Derbyshire, bringing you all the juicy gossip straight from the annals of drag history. This month, my magical tutu has whisked me back to 8th August 1990. Oh, the sheer excitement!

You see, my dears, this day was all about that intoxicating blend of dance, fabulousness, and well, frankly, utter camp. It was the night the legendary RuPaul graced the stage in the USA with her debut album ā€œSupermodel of the Worldā€. A whole generation of us got hooked on this Queen, and if I’m being honest, you’ll find me twirling my pink tutu to the beat of ā€œSupermodel (You Better Work)ā€ to this day.

But Ru wasn’t the only star on the scene, oh no! This was also the Golden Age of the New York Drag Ball scene – you know, where they used to compete in categories like ā€œRealnessā€ and ā€œExecutive Realnessā€. Think ā€œParis is Burningā€ vibes, only with even more hairspray and attitude. It was a world of fashion, competition, and pushing boundaries, something we as queens love dearly!

Of course, while I was mesmerized by all the big-city action, I wasn’t forgetting about my home country, England. Our drag scene was thriving too! There were amazing cabaret nights all over London and beyond, with venues like The Royal Vauxhall Tavern bustling with talent and excitement. Think glam drag queens belting out showstoppers, dancers strutting their stuff in flamboyant outfits, and a whole lot of sass in between.

While I didn’t get to attend any of the amazing events on this day, it was still a joy to soak up the vibrant energy. Seeing the impact Ru was having, knowing that Drag Balls were flourishing, and experiencing the energy of the UK scene – it was just so exhilarating. I was a giddy schoolgirl in a pink tutu, but of course, with far more contouring skills!

I also got a sneak peek into the world of Drag Magazine, which launched that year. A revolutionary magazine that shone a spotlight on the drag world, it became an invaluable source of inspiration and a platform for queens.

Now, to add a splash of personal flair to my journey back in time: I just couldn’t help but be inspired by the 90s fashion! It was a glorious time for sequins, glitter, and that daring combination of clashing colours. So naturally, I hit the vintage shops to hunt down some real gems, perfect for a little time-traveling fashion photoshoot! And darling, you wouldn't believe the fabulous treasures I found! Let’s just say I’m already planning a future blog post entirely dedicated to the amazing fashion from the 1990s.

To wrap things up, let’s get some tea brewing, my darlings. Because there’s nothing more delightful than a little afternoon chat and a dose of historical drag knowledge!

As always, don’t forget to visit www.pink-tutu.com for more tales from my drag history time-traveling adventures. Oh, and do let me know: which decade are you most fascinated by when it comes to drag history? Drop a comment below!

Keep shining, keep twirling, and remember – the world is a far more colourful place with a little pink tutu in the mix!

Until next time, my darlings!

Much love,
Emma šŸ’•
