Pink-Tutu Post #874: Back to the Future... Well, 1992 to be Exact!

Hello darlings! Emma here, your resident time-travelling ballerina drag queen from the depths of Derbyshire. It’s time to step into my magical pink tutu again and whisk ourselves back in time. This month, we’re twirling all the way back to 10th October, 1992!

My time machine, as you know, is powered by my passion for pink and my undying love for tutus. (Can’t you just imagine the shimmering tulle trails lighting up the temporal dimension?!) It's a secret that only my glitter-obsessed self knows, but the sheer power of this magical pink fabric is just astounding, you know. This time, we're headed to the US, honey, for some truly iconic drag moments.

Now, grab a glass of pink champagne, darlings, and let's dive right in!

Firstly, did you know that the drag world was about to witness the birth of a legendary queen: Bianca Del Rio! Yep, our beloved, witty queen was born in 1975 (on November 30th, for all the astrology lovers!), so 1992 marked a crucial turning point for Bianca as she began her journey to become the one and only Queen of Mean. Talk about foreshadowing!

And just picture it: in 1992, you could be watching some absolutely iconic shows! The legendary Divine, a Drag Legend for all time! was still shining bright, bless her! I imagine her at a legendary New York night club, giving the world what she does best, fierce drag performances with incredible showmanship and the audacity to defy every expectation. I wouldn’t be surprised if the girls were spilling out onto the streets, hungry for more of that iconic campness!

But there's more, dearies! Let's rewind even further... 1992 was the year where the iconic drag film “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar,” starring Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes and John Leguizamo, started production! Can you imagine the amount of drag and camp these three boys (who played queens!) were serving? I hear those outfits were phenomenal! That film was iconic in the way it took drag mainstream, and showcased it in all its glory and wonder!

Now, let's dive into the fashion! Oh darling, in 1992, it was a heady mix of early 90's fashion. We're talking about chunky platforms, high-cut swimsuits worn as tops (and let’s be honest, who could forget those tiny bathing suits in “To Wong Foo?!”), bold patterns and the resurgence of vintage looks! Remember that Cindy Crawford look with those high cheekbones and perfect skin? We were obsessed, darling!

Can’t we just talk about the hair? It was wild and untamed! And that's where the drag queen's real artistry came into play: They took this trend and kicked it up a notch, going all out with the big, high-fashion hair, giving us bouffants, beehives and some gravity-defying hairstyles for days. My love of pink tutus started right there, you know! All that 90s pink sparkle and feather trims! Just fabulous!

But 1992 was a bit more than just about looks. Drag was finding its voice through groundbreaking TV shows, like "The Real World", where our beloved drag icon, RuPaul, appeared! Talk about iconic moments, you know!

I imagine myself, strutting along the street with the rest of the queens in New York, dripping in pink glitter and sequins! Oh, honey, you know I would've brought my pink tutu along for this trip! A little tutu-tastic time travel through the years of 90s Drag, that's what dreams are made of!

But I always love hearing your feedback. Let me know what you think about this journey! Tell me: what do you think you’d have been wearing? Have you seen those drag icons perform? Let me know! We’ll be getting back in our time travelling tutus next month for another magical time travelling drag journey. Until then, keep on slaying, and don’t forget, honey, all you need is a little pink tutu!

Love, Emma
