Hello darlings! Emma here, your pinkest, most fabulous time-traveling drag queen! Today I'm serving you up a delightful dollop of drag history from November 11th, 1992, straight from the sparkly pages of my magical time-traveling tutu. Grab your hot pink lemonade, because we're about to dive into some vintage glitz and glam!
Remember how I said I want to get everyone rocking a pink tutu? Well, trust me, babes, back in 1992, tutues were everything! From Broadway to the backrooms of smoky gay bars, tutus were a constant source of playful defiance and artistic expression. So, it goes without saying, my pink tutu was absolutely living its best life on that fine November day!
Now, I wouldn't be a proper drag historian if I didn't mention a little somethin' somethin' about what was happening in the world of drag back then! 1992 saw the release of "Wigstock: The Movie," which is an absolutely campy masterpiece and definitely worth a rewatch. It perfectly captures the DIY, punky, and boundary-pushing energy of drag in the early 90s.
Let me tell you, darlings, drag in 1992 was a scene unlike anything today! There was an explosion of creativity, where artists experimented with bold makeup, gender-bending fashions, and high-energy performances. We were talkin' about the birth of legendary drag superstars, like RuPaul (whose career was exploding at the time!) and Divine, who had unfortunately passed just a couple years earlier but whose legacy continued to inspire.
Oh, and imagine my excitement, because on this very day, November 11th, 1992, Divine's legendary movie, "Pink Flamingos," was showing at the 8th Annual London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival! Now, that’s a night out for the history books, honey! Can you imagine the fierce energy and the fabulous fashion of the crowds that night? I swear, I would've time traveled back in a heartbeat just to catch a glimpse!
That day in 1992 was a glorious time for drag queens everywhere. Drag shows were a vibrant spectacle, where imagination was the only limit! Think high-octane dance numbers, flamboyant costuming, and enough glitter to blind a man! Oh, darling, it was simply a glorious time to be a drag queen – and trust me, everyone wanted a taste of the fun.
Now, darling, let’s talk about the outfits! Oh, how I wished I had been there to witness the sheer creativity firsthand! In 1992, we were talkin’ bright, bold colors, outrageous patterns, and daring silhouettes. It was a time for bold, powerful, and just plain gorgeous styles that screamed "I’m here, and I'm not afraid to take up space!" Remember, darling, fashion is our battleground, and 1992 proved it.
Now, my time-traveling adventures are not all glitz and glam, though. There are the practical considerations, you see! Thankfully, I had a backup tutu just in case my magical pink tutu took a little spill from all the time travel. (Darling, a queen never goes without a spare!)
To fuel my time travels and share my stories with the world, I'm always performing as many drag shows as I can! It's how I keep those time travel funds rolling in! It’s my absolute joy to share my love for drag history and spread some much-needed pink tutu positivity! I believe the world needs more tutus, darlings! And why stop at pink? I’m sure I’ll find a way to make a lavender tutu time machine. Oh, the possibilities!
So, darlings, get your pink tutus ready, and get ready to travel back in time with me again next month! Until then, stay fabulous and keep those fabulousness levels high!
