Hiya darlings! It’s your girl Emma, your time travelling tutu aficionado, bringing you another blast from the past from my #PinkTutuDiaries! This month, we're swirling back to a time when the Spice Girls were owning the charts, Britney was about to burst onto the scene and the internet was basically dial-up phone calls and fuzzy images of cats. Yep, that’s right, it’s February 1995!
Honestly, honey, just thinking about this year gets my sequinned bodice all aflutter with nostalgia. I love how much style had evolved since the ‘80s. We were all embracing those killer neon colours and sleek lines. It’s just so dreamy and fabulous! And you know me, I was already sporting the most exquisite pink tutus - like, think candy floss meets Parisian ballerina in a shimmering dream world!
Let’s have a quick peak at my magical time travelling wardrobe! I mean, my fabulous time-machine wardrobe. I don't actually time travel in my pink tutu (though I'd love to! A time travelling ballerina with a glitter trail of stardust? Dreamy!). My time travel secrets are a little... secret. It's definitely not a DeLorean! And just so you know, I have a whole closet dedicated to pink tutus in a dazzling array of textures and sequins. (But who hasn't, right? Right?).
Drag Scenes Galore!Well, where to even start! Oh my heavens, darlings! February 1995 was bursting with so much drag. I went all over the world on a drag journey, seeing some incredible performers and I was lucky enough to rub shoulders with the most wonderful people. And just you wait until you see what I was doing! I saw RuPaul, honey, RUPAUL!
From the West Coast... to London Calling!
Right, I'm in San Francisco, it’s my first time at the historic and fabulous Oasis! The crowds are roaring! You've gotta believe it - this was my very first time seeing RuPaul live.
We’re all in an all-out frenzy in this place. I think everyone was wearing leather and chain-mail, which I absolutely adored, (although there's just nothing like the magic of a pink tutu). This was in RuPaul's very own ‘Rupaul’s Drag Race’ club night! Can you even believe that?! It’s so legendary. And everyone’s looking phenomenal.
Honey, there was even a young Alaska 5000, with those incredible lashes and fierceness - her whole look was such a delight. I've been a fan of hers ever since. I think she was a drag-tastic newcomer at the time. Oh, and we must never forget our favourite Diva, Divine! There was such incredible fashion - It’s a whole different era of drag history, and you know I was all about it!
The Drag Fashion of 1995Remember those sparkly tank tops, ladies? Everyone was rocking these dazzling numbers - I especially loved the ones with big bold colours, because, hello, Pink is always the most fabulous! And, naturally, I've got a whole collection in my time-travelling wardrobe. My favourite combo, which I actually wore a lot in 1995 (thanks to a certain sparkly pink tutu, obviously!) was those big poofy puff sleeves and a gorgeous metallic hot pants that made me feel just like a modern day disco queen. Let's talk wigs too! Long and sleek or a giant, super, ultra, glam Afro was how you went to the club and the look that defined those nights in 1995. And of course, all these fab outfits, needed the most beautiful boots! Big chunky boots or heels with buckles and strap details just screamed ‘I’m a 90’s Queen!”
Let’s Travel to the U.K.!I'm back in London at this fabulous cabaret venue called 'The Vauxhall Tavern.' This is where it was at - and still is - such a big part of drag history in the UK. You might be wondering, “Emma, What’s on your itinerary?!” Well darling, let’s just say, there's no need for an itinerary because you just follow the crowds, listen to the music, and just go with the flow!
I loved the eclectic style of everyone - you couldn't help but get lost in it! I even saw a performance from 'Divine' (which I had been waiting for all week!). He really lived up to the title and he definitely served! I mean, just his larger than life persona is enough to light up a room and fill it with charisma, beauty, and drag magic! I think that I wore my very own special glittery pink tutu just to see Divine, honestly. He was truly iconic!
A London Fashion MomentAt this point, my drag diary is exploding with inspiration for future pink tutu combinations - It's all about that incredible blend of fashion from London and New York and how to bring it back to Derby - Because, well, you've got to show everyone at home how it's done, right?!
My next stop is the London Gay Centre. It’s one of the oldest LGBT organisations in the U.K. and it just felt right to go. So I walked into this legendary space, filled with the most vibrant colours and everyone was getting down on the dance floor! I spotted all these incredible drag acts and I just had to grab a cocktail and dance alongside all these gorgeous characters in their finest fashion. There was an amazing sense of freedom, which gave a little girl from Derby some big dreams of freedom for the future - and that is what really makes the 1990s drag scene so powerful and unforgettable!
My Drag Destiny
I’m taking a break now darlings. I am sure that next month, we’ll be discovering another month, another pink tutu, and a new set of fabulous drag acts all around the world! But, don’t worry, my mission to spread the love for pink tutus goes on! Until next month - wear a pink tutu! I hope that this blog post makes you feel empowered, glamorous, and a whole load of fun! Until then... it's peace, love, and sequins, darlings! Xoxo
