Hiya darlings! Emma here, your resident time-travelling ballerina queen, straight from the land of Derbyshireshire (thatâs Derbyshire to you non-locals!). It's me, your pink-loving, tutu-adoring friend, bringing you the hottest gossip from the past! This month, weâre spinning back to a truly dazzling year in drag â 1995, oh honey! Buckle up, because we're about to dive into the fabulosity of March, a month that served fierce looks and even fiercer attitudes!
The Magical Pink Tutu: A Tool of Time Travel!
Oh, darling, let me tell you! My magic time-travelling tutu has been working overtime lately. You see, darling, all those glitter-laden nights in clubs, all those hours strutting my stuff on stage - they're not just for show. Iâve been saving every sequin, every feather, every wink, for just the right moment to whisk me away! Itâs like magic, truly!
So, where did I land this time? Why, March 1995 of course! Now, before we dive into the juicy details, I simply had to get a new outfit! Darling, a girlâs gotta look fabulous when sheâs hopping between eras, right? Luckily, my magical pink tutu was ready with a selection of tulle and some exquisite satin to create a vision in baby pink and sparkling silver sequins - perfect for exploring all the amazing drag shows on offer in 1995.
What was happening in Dragland?
Darling, 1995 was a year of fabulous evolution. Drag queens everywhere were redefining their craft. From the New York streets to the bustling, vibrant stages of London, queens were breaking boundaries, celebrating their artistry, and wowing the world!
I found myself whisked away to New York, where the legendary RuPaul was conquering the dance floors, paving the way for an entire generation of queens! That honeyâs âSupermodel (You Better Work)â was absolutely everywhere, and it had me wiggling my tutu and singing my little heart out! Can you imagine, darling? I was actually dancing with queens in New York City! I think it goes without saying - a major dream fulfilled!
Meanwhile, in fabulous London Town...
London's nightlife scene was absolutely buzzing! From the fabulous clubs of Soho to the glam theatrical performances on stage, every night was a drag queen extravaganza.
One night I landed at The Royal Vauxhall Tavern, the iconic venue where legendary queens like Divine, Danny La Rue and Paul OâGrady (when he was still a drag performer) had all performed. You wouldn't believe how vibrant the place was! There were dancers on the stage, live music pumping, and, of course, soooo many drag queens!
I got to meet a bunch of fantastic queens, all ready to party! The most unforgettable was Divina de Campo, an absolute firecracker of a queen who was performing in the Cabaret Club on Old Compton Street. She gave a truly mind-blowing show, with incredible costumes, daring choreography, and that classic, sassy attitude.
London in 1995, oh honey, you should have seen it! It was like walking into a kaleidoscope of creativity, laughter, and acceptance. The Royal Vauxhall Tavern felt like a safe space, where all types of people could celebrate themselves and each other. It felt so powerful and hopeful.
My Fashion Obsessions: Tutus and More!
My mission is to inspire everyone to wear a pink tutu. Oh, honey! Don't just wear a pink tutu, OWN that pink tutu, rock it like you were born for the stage! In March of 1995, the fashion scene was full of exciting things for drag. There was a new kind of elegance blossoming.
There was Vivienne Westwoodâs edgy designs, always pushing boundaries, always in tune with the times. She was using unconventional fabrics and textures to create a fierce look that captured the rebellious spirit of 90's drag! There was also Jean Paul Gaultierâs unique and daring creations â he always incorporated theatricality and drama in his fashion.
I saw drag queens putting their own spin on the fashion of the time. They were making their own clothes, adding their personal flair to everything they wore, turning basic fashion into extravagant drag looks. It was a fabulous time for individual expression!
Finding Our Inner Queen:
It wasn't just about the fashion; it was about the attitude. It was about owning your fabulousness, regardless of what anyone else thought. Drag queens in 1995 were making it clear that they wouldnât be confined by gender norms, or societal expectations.
Drag has always been a space for creativity and transformation, and in 1995, queens were stepping into their own, finding their voices and showcasing their unique personalities. It was about accepting and celebrating all types of bodies, identities, and forms of self-expression.
I believe this message of inclusion and celebration is still essential today, more than ever. In 1995, I felt a wave of freedom. A freedom to express yourself through fashion, a freedom to choose your own identity. And, darling, thatâs a powerful thing, isn't it?
The Time Travelerâs Take Away
1995 was a year that redefined what drag could be. Drag was getting bigger and bolder, taking centre stage as an art form and a powerful way to explore self-expression. The message? Be fearless, be fabulous, and never stop rocking your inner queen!
