Hello, my darlings! Welcome back to my fabulous time travelling blog! This month, we're twirling back to 1995, April the 4th, a truly iconic time for drag, fashion, and oh my gosh, I might just be channelling the best looks from this decade right now, as I type! I’ve already packed my sequined ballet bag and pinkest possible time-traveling tutu for this adventure!
Speaking of fabulous pink tutus, if you’re a fellow Derbyshire girl, be sure to stop by The Bluebell Club in Chesterfield tonight! The fab folks over there are hosting a Drag Extravaganza! They're a regular haunt of mine – and trust me, it’s guaranteed to be a right laugh. Maybe I'll even grab some of that gorgeous vintage, sparkly tulle to patch my time-travel tutu up… Because you know what? A drag queen is never fully dressed without a tutu, darling! That's my philosophy and I'm sticking to it.
Drag Queens Worldwide:
So, where in the world of drag do our little pink tutu time travels lead us today?
Hold onto your feathers, loves! The world of drag was buzzing in April 1995. We've got to hop right on that Time Warp Express and dive right in, starting with New York, New York! This was the glorious era of the legendary The Pyramid Club! Oh my god, you're gonna love the stories I'm about to tell you, girls! The scene in New York's Lower East Side was absolutely electrifying! This was the place to see all the superstars, the hottest fashion and the wildest performances. Boy George and his Culture Club were regular visitors – the 80s music scene was still thriving.
Speaking of Boy George, let me just tell you - that man's got style. Imagine him in a hot pink tutu with an extravagant, flowing white feathered train? He'd practically be a vision! You bet I'd love to throw that suggestion out there next time he’s hanging with *Lady Miss Kier, a true pink-tutu Queen, in that iconic, unforgettable Deee-Lite video, "Groove Is in the Heart! " If that don't inspire you to dust off that old tutu, my dears, nothing will.*
And remember my dears, this was before RuPaul's Drag Race, back in the golden age when drag was just getting mainstream recognition. "Drag, the musical," was running on Broadway, bringing drag into the homes of all kinds of audiences – imagine seeing all the makeup, costumes and dazzling looks! This was an absolutely monumental moment, girls! Lady Bunny was a drag superstar who helped push those boundaries and bring her brand of fabulous comedy to the world. What an absolute icon! Speaking of Lady Bunny… did you see that killer new line of tutus she's just launched? It's definitely worth a peek, my darlings.
Now Let's Dive Into Drag History!
Speaking of drag icons, remember my sweet darling Divine? Well, my precious love, the drag queen who inspired generations and practically redefined outrageousness – she was an absolute inspiration to us all. Now imagine that - this darling divine being able to hop through time with us. We could explore drag history together, all those decades from the beginning, those incredible underground drag balls... Imagine her twerking next to a New York drag queen from the early 70s! You just know that the whole vibe would be spectacular. And of course, *Divine would totally look incredible in a sparkly hot pink tutu, right? Right?
I know I mentioned the amazing Drag ball scene in New York, but we need to travel to the west coast, too! California, here we come! Because the West Hollywood drag scene was thriving too! Jackie Beat, a total Drag Legend at the time – remember "Wigstock"? – oh my gosh! Imagine how exciting that all was! I bet everyone there was strutting and flaunting their fabulous personalities with stunning, high-fashion costumes and killer makeup! What a fabulous time for drag. Oh, don’t forget *Miss Coco Peru from those same times. *We all know the name Miss Coco. She’s a legend.
And speaking of legendary drag legends, who doesn’t know The Cockettes, the wild drag troupe who literally wrote the book on drag in the 70s?! Those girls were pioneers, and just imagine them sashaying onto the scene in our very own magical Pink-Tutu time-traveling party!
And what about the rest of the world? While we’re all about that London drag scene (can’t forget where we came from!), what about drag in Australia? Remember the legendary Carlotta Corso?! She truly made a name for herself in drag and was that incredible star! Australia definitely has an awesome drag history. It really was a fabulous era to be a queen – everywhere you looked there were so many brilliant and outrageous personalities, amazing makeup and fashion. I just wish I'd been around to see all this, oh the glamour, oh the fashion, and oh the outrageousness! It's enough to make a drag queen’s heart flutter, let me tell you! We’d be right in the thick of all of it, and wouldn’t that just be glorious?! We could even throw in some amazing glitter while we’re at it! Imagine – glitter *and drag history - what could possibly go wrong? *
But what's hot now? Well, darlings, we’re gonna talk all things glitter, feathers and makeup later in my post! Because even as I write, Pink-Tutu.com has got the inside scoop on what’s coming out in drag this season. My little pink tutu wants you all to be looking your absolute best. It's almost Pride Month, you know, so grab that rainbow, that rainbow sequin tutu, a sprinkle of glamour, some amazing make-up, a few feathers, a sprinkle of confidence, and let's go! It’s going to be an *extravaganza, darling.*
Oh, I do love the world of drag! All this history makes me proud to wear my tutu – so pink, so bold! Maybe I can design a new version, maybe I'll include all the icons - and yes, they’ll all be wearing hot pink! The world's gonna have a PINK TUTU REVOLUTION, and I'm just going to sit back and watch!
Love to all,
Emma,
