Hello my gorgeous little darlings! Welcome back to the Pink-Tutu blog, your one-stop shop for all things drag and a dash of time-travelling magic! Today, we’re hopping in my magical pink tutu, adjusting our sequined tiara, and hurtling ourselves back to November 1996, a time when grunge was cool, the internet was in its infancy, and drag was absolutely smashing it!
Now, let's rewind the clock…
I landed right in the middle of a vibrant New York City, surrounded by a dizzying whirlwind of energy and, yes, you guessed it, more pink than you could shake a feather boa at! It's like they knew I was coming! Oh, and you wouldn't believe the shopping! Oh my, it was just a dream, darling. I just had to get myself a brand new fuchsia faux fur coat and a sparkly pink sequined clutch to add to my collection. Honestly, this trip was pure luxury, darlings!
I hear whispers that Judy Garland, bless her beautiful soul, had passed away only 11 years prior, back in 1985. If you love the glitz and glam, darling, her legacy lives on! From the dazzling stage shows to the inspiring voice, she is forever a queen. And while she's no longer with us, let us not forget all those stunning drag performers who draw inspiration from her.
Speaking of stunning drag performers, darling, you couldn't walk a block in New York without bumping into a legendary queen, even back then! I managed to snag some prime seats at the infamous Pyramid Club – and oh, my dear, you’d think I'd stepped into a Technicolor dream! There were so many amazing queens giving it their all on that stage. The costumes, the makeup, the attitude! The energy was electric! I even saw the legendary Divine gracing the stage in her full glory, all that glamour! She looked divine! No pun intended.
Let’s face it, Divine was a queen ahead of her time! A pioneer for LGBTQ+ rights and representation! Her unique style and larger-than-life personality resonated with a whole generation, including yours truly, back in my time! It’s a joy seeing those powerful images and knowing that the queen truly changed the face of drag! And don’t forget about The Cockettes! Back then, they were breaking the mold with their blend of drag, theater, and avant-garde performance. Just picture it – glam rock, experimental dance, and drag all intertwined! These queens weren't just performers; they were artists. The art of drag truly is one to be cherished, darling!
As the month of November progressed, it was time for me to hit the road. So, I popped on my sparkly pink tiara, climbed into my pink tutu time machine, and whoosh, off I went, leaving a trail of glitter in my wake!
Where will my next journey in time take me? Who knows, darling? Maybe it'll be to meet one of my favourite queens of today, like Bianca Del Rio, or even a future me on a Pink-Tutu-clad quest to dominate the drag scene. Or maybe I'll just sit here in my pink tutu and admire the beautiful, unique, ever-evolving world of drag from my couch! It's never a dull moment with a passion for drag as big as mine, that's for sure, darling! Until next time, be bold, be glamorous, and stay tuned! xxoo
