Post Number 949: A Pink Tutu's Trip to 1999!

Hello darlings! It’s your fabulous, time-travelling blogger Emma here, and as always, it's a pink tutu extravaganza! This month, I've jetted off in my trusty magical pink tutu all the way back to the year 1999. Buckle your seat belts, darlings, because this one's a hoot!

Now, 1999. Oh, how I adore this year! The era of Britney, the Spice Girls, and, dare I say, the dawn of the new millennium! It's a year steeped in fashion history, a year where glitter ruled, and we certainly weren't afraid to embrace the colour pink, darling! Speaking of pink, let me just tell you, it was like the world had a giant pink explosion that year! And let’s not forget those gorgeous butterfly clips! Drag, Darling, Drag!

Now, my little darlings, let's dive headfirst into the fabulousness that was the drag scene in 1999! You wouldn't believe the energy – it was electric, darling, absolutely electric! This year was a game changer! From the legendary shows at the Stonewall Inn in New York to the glamorous soirées at the Black Cat in London, the stage was bursting with dazzling talent.

Imagine a world of lip syncs to Britney Spears’ "…Baby One More Time", or, my absolute favourite, a high-kicking number to the Spice Girls' "Wannabe" with some truly spectacular feather boas. Now that’s what I call entertainment, darlings!

Backstage at the Box

And talking of fabulous shows, did you know that 1999 saw the birth of one of my all-time favourite Drag performance hubs: The Box in London! You could almost say it was born from the drag queen equivalent of "divine intervention!"

This exciting new space embraced all forms of artistic expression. Drag Queens, performers, dancers – everyone found their space at this London gem. I remember sneaking into one of the shows, darling – it was a whirlwind of colour and excitement, like a sparkly tornado in a good way, you know? The music was booming, the lights were blindingly glamorous, and there were so many people rocking dazzling makeup and fantastic outfits, I simply couldn’t contain my excitement.

It’s also a little-known fact that one of my favourite contemporary drag queens, the incredible Miss Fame, made her stage debut in 1999, a bit further afield in Dallas, Texas! Can you believe it, darlings? Miss Fame in her early, glittering days! I adore seeing her today - an absolutely fabulous queen with so much style. Her evolution is one for the drag history books!

Shopping and Glamour

Of course, no visit to 1999 is complete without a trip to the shopping districts. Imagine the thrill, darling, the pure, undiluted delight! The boutiques overflowing with vintage-inspired clothing – those cute mini skirts, the crop tops and bell bottoms - absolutely divine!

But don't think this is all about being high fashion. 1999 was all about expression, darling. If you felt fabulous wearing pink tutus and sequins – that's exactly what you wore! And don’t even get me started on the sheer, audacious amounts of glitter! Let’s just say, every 1999 fashion look would make my pink tutu sing! I absolutely had to pick up a few dazzling pieces - maybe a few bedazzled bandanas and a fabulous "Just Breathe" slogan t-shirt? Because, after all, 1999 was about letting loose and embracing everything about you, your authentic self.

And don't you dare forget the shoes, darling! It’s the accessories that take a look from amazing to phenomenal. 1999 saw a huge embrace of platforms! Who doesn’t love adding an inch or two of height?

The Glam of The Year 2000

Now, of course, 1999 was all about the countdown to 2000, darling. All of these things are intrinsically linked to this incredible, sparkly era of glamour. Imagine, all of those dazzling New Year's Eve parties! The joy, the anticipation! And remember how many of us just thought the year 2000 would be totally amazing, you know, a year like no other. Well, I think it did live up to expectations.

And guess what? It’s the very same reason why, every year, on 31st December, I time travel back to 1999. It’s the place where you can just let loose, dress up and have a truly joyous night. Just make sure, darling, that your glitter stays on throughout the night. And don't be afraid to go wild – we can't be too glamorous, right, my loves?

Tutu Time

I know, I know! My dear darlings, I've talked about it, I’ve dreamed it, I’ve twirled in it! Yes, my quest for the world wearing pink tutus is strong in 1999. Now, 1999 is an iconic time, a time for breaking norms. I’m sure you all remember the iconic movie 'Clueless' starring Alicia Silverstone. Imagine it, a high school dance but everyone in pink tutus!

Of course, it's a personal mission. A dream of mine, a dream to be shared by all! You'd be surprised by the acceptance you get, you know? It's something I want to do not only in my own little bubble of 1999 but on the streets, in clubs, at concerts – let’s do it! It would truly be magical, darling! Just imagine how beautiful that would be.

So there you have it, darlings, my trip to the magnificent year 1999! What a trip it was, bursting with vibrant colours, spectacular fashion, and an unstoppable, captivating sense of glamour. Remember to keep sparkling, darlings! And, as always, if you want to learn more about drag history or are simply curious about this enchanting world, let me know! We can always go on an adventure together, maybe next month, in our favourite pink tutus, right here on my little blog.

Until next time, darling!   Your lovely, glamorous Emma.
