Greetings, my darling darlings! It’s Emma here, your fabulous fashion-forward pink tutu-wearing time traveler, and boy oh boy, this month’s trip was absolutely extra! Buckle up, darlings, because this journey is full of sequins, feathers, and enough fabulousness to fill a dozen drag balls!
February 1999, that's where we landed, in the glittering, glamorous city that never sleeps... New York, baby! My time-traveling pink tutu whisked me straight into the heart of this dazzling metropolis, and let me tell you, the energy was electric!
As I stepped off my magical time travel tutu, (who knew time travel could be so comfy?!) the first thing that struck me was the vibe - so energetic, so confident. New York had a pulse, a beat that just called out to my inner queen. I was buzzing with anticipation!
My first stop? The drag mecca: The Stonewall Inn! Oh, the stories those walls could tell! It felt electric standing there, in the heart of history, surrounded by the echoes of defiance, pride, and an undying passion for self-expression.
I could practically hear the chants of “Gay Power!”, “Fight Back!” and “We’re Here, We’re Queer, Get Used To It!”. I took a deep breath, feeling a wave of pride and gratitude wash over me. These legends, these trailblazers, these brave souls paved the way for us to be able to freely express ourselves today, to strut our stuff in our feathers and sequins and to wear our fabulousness loud and proud!
The atmosphere was electrifying! And you know what else I noticed? While times may have changed, there was this incredible spirit of community, a fierce love for one another, that felt so powerful, so real. It was something I instantly connected with. We might be from different eras, but the heartbeat of the LGBTQ+ community resonated deeply.
I couldn’t wait to experience the vibrant drag scene New York had to offer! My second stop had to be a legendary Drag show, and of course, the hottest place in the city was Judy’s Cabaret in The West Village.
I was giddy with anticipation as I entered. And, let me tell you, it was everything and more! I felt that glow, that electricity I had sensed outside the Stonewall Inn, only intensified. The room buzzed with an incredible energy - bright lights, laughter, and cheers. And the stage… oh, the stage was just dazzling! A mix of sassy and sweet queens, all shimmering in their fabulous costumes and high heels!
There were glamorous drag queens serving classic Hollywood realness, some strutting their stuff in stunning, high-fashion ensembles, others pushing boundaries with innovative performances, and even a queen who looked amazing in a sequined catsuit, which she expertly contorted and danced in like a majestic feline. It was jaw-dropping! There was definitely some glitter-tastic choreo! The music was thumping and the audience was cheering with every twist and turn, every drop, and every pose! There were even some drag kings performing! I’m not even going to try and describe their looks. Just wow! They rocked a fantastic vibe and looked amazing!
Judy’s, it seemed, was a haven for all things drag, a true melting pot of creativity and expression.
After the show, I met up with some queens, and you know what they were rocking? You guessed it – pink tutus! I wasn’t alone in my love of this fabulousness! There’s just something about a pink tutu that just screams confidence, fun, and fabulousness. It was a true joy to connect with my fellow pink-tutu-loving drag sisters. I shared stories of my time travel and the future with them, and they shared stories of drag in their time, telling me all about the early days of the ballroom scene in New York, how drag developed its strong roots here. It was so inspiring! I can see why this is a place so filled with passion for self-expression!
Of course, no trip to New York is complete without a spot of retail therapy, and the sheer amount of amazing shops on Broadway, especially in Soho, left me practically gasping for air. Oh, the glitter, the sequins, the feather boas! I bought enough pink accessories for an entire season’s worth of performances, let alone an entire new collection of pink tutus, which I'm sure will make many a fabulous look!
Overall, February 1999 was a truly unforgettable trip. I had the pleasure of meeting so many talented and creative people in the drag scene, I fell even more in love with the world of drag, and let me tell you, I left that dazzling city feeling empowered, inspired, and more than ready to share my love for pink tutus and drag with the world!
