Pink Tutu Time Travels: #DragQueenHistory 1999, March

Hello darling! Emma here, your resident pink-tutu-wearing time traveller! It's March 1999 and I'm channeling my inner ballerina, whisked back in my trusty pink tutu to this fabulous time of disco-ball-sized hair and fabulous makeup! This is Post #951 on the www.pink-tutu.com blog – why not pop over after you've read this fabulous, and I do mean fabulous, history update?

Now, March 1999... the world is buzzing! You wouldn't believe the gigs happening. First off, the legendary Lady Bunny was gracing New York with her presence at The Pyramid Club. Talk about a fierce mama! I’ve been dreaming of meeting her, just a girl from Derbyshire hoping for a photo with her dazzling, sparkly, icon-status self! The divine Lady Bunny is my ultimate drag queen role model, someone I admire deeply for her sharp wit, comedy chops, and incredible performances.

Meanwhile, over in Los Angeles, Divine – yeah, the legendary, one-and-only Divine! – had just performed at the Knitting Factory, and everyone's talking about it. Divine was such a pioneer in the art of drag and such an amazing singer. The story goes, this particular gig saw Divine donning her signature glamour-punk look, leaving the audience in awe! They said she was rocking it, darling. It's said she was ā€œall things fabulousā€, just what we want from a drag queen, isn't it? The queen of Camp itself! The epitome of drag excellence! I know I’d have loved to see her in all her glory.

Across the Pond, darling, the legendary Divine Inspiration, one of the biggest names in British drag at the time, was holding court in Manchester. I just know the queens were looking fantastic - Divine Inspiration was a total queen, serving major glam! From what I hear, this time around, she brought some high-camp comedy routines along for good measure, leaving everyone roaring with laughter!

And let's not forget about the legendary Mzz Lynn, Queen of All Queens in the vibrant and beautiful Glasgow. Her iconic shows were always sell-outs, a mix of sass and stunning outfits that left the audiences breathless.

Can't forget my roots, can we? In my Derbyshire, right on March 10th, ā€˜RuPaul’s Drag Race’ was actually a glimmer in the eye! Can you imagine? In 1999, this groundbreaking reality television show hadn't hit our screens yet. Oh how things have changed! This makes my pink heart flutter – I love watching Drag Race! We are living in an era where drag queens are finally receiving the recognition and acceptance they deserve, and ā€˜RuPaul's Drag Race’ has been at the forefront of this revolution!

In the world of fashion, baby! We were blessed with so much incredible stuff. In March of '99, *Balenciaga launched its ā€œHourglassā€ campaign, *and my oh my! What a look, a stunning collection, and my dear readers, guess who loves a structured waist? I certainly do! Balenciaga had its magic fingers in shaping fashion - in both senses of the word. Their high fashion, beautifully constructed looks were truly influential, and I wouldn’t be surprised if these lines made their way into drag ball looks in time. That would be fabulous.

Let's not forget about my passion: the pink tutu. In March '99, a little shop called Miss Lulu was launching, and they had this gorgeous array of tutus, darling! So many colors! I'm talking shades of lilac, turquoise, emerald green – the perfect place to find my next masterpiece! In fact, the next day, I am planning on doing a little shopping myself, to be honest! My favourite shop of the time for tutus was La Senorita Boutique, located on London's Kings Road, oh yes darling, we are getting very serious here! It is where I snagged this magical one, that's allowed me to journey through time! It had every imaginable style, fabric and color of tutu under the roof!

My mission is to bring pink tutu fabulousness to everyone! This blog has allowed me to spread my love of drag, travel through time and learn about incredible drag queens and icons throughout history. But nothing is more important to me than reminding you, my dearest readers: A pink tutu is the most powerful fashion statement of all time!

So keep on shining, my lovelies! Keep up with the latest drag gossip, because as the great RuPaul once said, ā€œDon't be a drag, just be a queen!ā€ And, of course, be fabulous!

Lots of love and a big pink kiss!

Emma xx
