Hello my gorgeous little angels! Emma here, your pink-tutu clad guide to the wonderful, dazzling, fabulous world of drag! And oh darling, do we have a lot to cover today. Get ready to twirl, because we're time-traveling to the year 2000!
It's a bit hard to believe that this whole millennium thing is happening, don't you think? The year 2000 - what a time to be alive! Honestly, my darlings, the Y2K craze was in full swing! But in my world, the real buzz was all about drag.
A Blast from the Past: New Millennium, New Drag Queens
You wouldn't believe the excitement! The turn of the century was bringing new faces to the scene and that's always good news, innit? It was truly an exciting time. Drag was making waves all over the world! Now, remember this was before the whole "drag explosion" that we see today, so finding a drag show in 2000 meant truly seeking out that secret little jewel in your town. I mean, I know it sounds hard to believe, but back then you couldn't just Google "Drag shows near me" and bingo! A whole calendar of gigs pops up.
The Queen of my Dreams: RuPaul!
But before we jump into all the amazing drag happening all over the globe, we have to give a shoutout to the drag superstar of the moment - RuPaul! Oh my darling, how I love her! She'd just released the iconic "Supermodel (You Better Work)" album and let me tell you, it was all the rage. The whole world was learning about drag thanks to her music. Who can resist her divine wisdom? "If you can't love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else? Can I get an amen? Hallelujah!" Amen! RuPaul truly made the year 2000 shine bright with her fabulous energy.
From London to New York, Drag was Sizzling!
Now, darling, you already know I love a good trip! So I had to see what drag queens were doing in different countries! Let's take a trip to London! At the time, the legendary club, The Royal Vauxhall Tavern, was thriving with shows and acts like the fab Betty Legs Diamond. She was serving up that classic British camp we all know and love, and just oozing that vintage glamour!
Meanwhile, over in the states, I had to go check out New York! It was bustling with drag queens at the time, including Lady Bunny, who'd just launched her famous Party Up! Tour. Lady Bunny always puts on such a fabulous show. The East Village, The Village Gate, XL Nightclub, and The Ritz, they were just some of the hot spots where drag was kicking it into high gear.
The Magical Drag Scene of Paris!
Did I mention my love for the French language, darlings? It just sounds so romantic. I also loved visiting Paris during the early 2000s. They really had a special drag scene of their own! Drag balls were huge in the city of lights and drag queen like Divine and Candy Darling, although tragically no longer with us, continued to inspire and amaze!
Global Drag: The Magic is Spreading!
But my trip wasn't over! In Australia, the legendary drag queen Carlotta Corso, also known as Marea Brennan, was bringing her vibrant, fierce performances to the Stonewall Hotel in Sydney.
And what's a trip around the world without some good old-fashioned fun in Brazil? They had a thriving underground drag scene that had a raw, wild, and incredibly exciting energy, just so fabulous! Itβs so fantastic that drag scenes all around the globe were just flourishing with creativity, even outside of the usual places like London or New York. It just shows you how drag can unite people everywhere!
The Pink Tutu Legacy: You Better Wear One!
As my pink tutu and I floated through the year 2000, I took a moment to soak it all in. It was truly a glorious time to be a drag queen, full of new ideas and groundbreaking performances. It's fascinating to see how far drag has come.
That's why, darlings, I love time travel! Every trip helps us learn about the drag legends who came before us and the magic they brought to the world. Now I have to ask: are you inspired to wear pink tutus now? I'm not just a drag queen with a passion for pink; I'm a fashion advocate! We need more tutus, darling, more twirls, and more fabulous energy in this world! And if you can't tell, pink tutus are my very favorite - that bright, vibrant, powerful pink that is as beautiful as your heart! So darling, wear a pink tutu with me and help me spread the joy!
Oh darling, remember you can find me at www.pink-tutu.com, where I'm blogging every month, posting about drag queen history, fabulous events, and anything pink that takes my fancy! And until next time, stay safe, stay fierce, and most importantly, stay fabulous!
Your Pink-Tutu Girl,
Emma
