Pink-Tutu Post #1037: Backstage with the Legends! (May 2006 Edition)

Hiya darlings! Emma here, your resident pink tutu enthusiast and time-travelling drag historian. It's time for another fabulous voyage through the glittering history of drag, and this month, we're setting our sights on May 2006. Buckle your pink feather boas and grab your sparkly tiaras, because we're going backstage for a night you won't forget!

Now, you all know my love for a good tutu, right? I mean, pink tulle, the billowing layers, the effortless grace – it's just the epitome of fabulous. And believe me, when I tell you, this trip was a tututastic dream come true. I twirled through the cobblestone streets of London, my pink tulle skirt swirling like a ballet of its own, headed straight for the heart of the drag scene.

And let me tell you, darlings, 2006 was a glorious time for drag. We're talking RuPaul's Drag Race season 1 (with the legendary Akashia!) just having finished, leaving the world breathless. The queer community was buzzing with excitement and pride, ready to celebrate our queens and embrace all things drag!

Speaking of queens, where do I even begin? The legend himself, Divine, was still gracing us with his larger-than-life presence. He was an absolute inspiration, a pioneer of drag, and his influence was undeniable. Just picturing his iconic looks in my mind, I knew this trip would be overflowing with excitement.

My first stop was a hidden underground club called "The Jockey," a veritable den of dazzling, glamorous, and most importantly, pink (you know how I love a good colour coordination!). The music was thumping, the lights were strobe-ing, and the energy was electrifying! Every corner buzzed with creativity – glitter bomb blasts, vibrant wigs, feathers and fabulousness as far as the eye could see! The atmosphere was as intoxicating as a good glass of Prosecco.

It wasn’t just the crowd that was keeping my attention. On stage was the absolute diva herself, Lady Bunny! Oh my god, her comedic timing and the pure energy she radiated left me gasping for air. Imagine, darlings, this queen, in her full feather and fur glory, just spitting fire with her jokes and sassy routines, all the while belting out some show tunes with such fierce energy. This woman was, and remains, an icon, inspiring countless drag queens all over the world with her fearless humour and dazzling stage presence.

The crowd, let me tell you, was on fire! Each performer, with their own unique flair, drew in cheers and howls of laughter that shook the club to its core. It was like a collective celebration of individuality, self-expression, and a love for the beautiful chaos of drag. I couldn’t have asked for a more fabulous welcome to the world of 2006 drag.

It’s not just about the performances though, darling! 2006 saw drag seeping into the mainstream like glitter after a chaotic show. "Wigstock" was in its prime, attracting massive crowds eager to see drag in all its vibrant, chaotic glory. Even MTV started getting on board, introducing the world to the flamboyant, sometimes slightly bizarre (in the best way possible!), world of drag.

I have to tell you, I took full advantage of this fabulous trip. I shopped for hours, getting my paws on the trendiest fashions of 2006. Think sequined hot pants, giant platform boots (because who doesn't love a bit of extra height!), and of course, some showstopping pink feather boas (the more the merrier, darling!).

My pink tutu danced to every beat of the music, and the London crowd embraced it with open arms. They loved it, darlings! So many faces beamed with joy and approval, eager to share this little piece of drag magic. This gave me so much confidence, and I felt this little sparkle of a thought… Maybe…just maybe, we could start a little movement, all about the pink tutu!

And wouldn't that be fabulously fun? Just picture it: a world filled with twirling, dancing pink tutu wearers, celebrating all things fabulous! It's the stuff dreams are made of.

It wouldn't be a real 2006 experience without catching a few shows on TV. The reality show, "RuPaul’s Drag Race", was in its infancy, with its first season ending only a few weeks earlier. Oh, those fabulous, unique, talented queens, each bringing their own magic to the stage. Seeing these fierce queens navigate the challenges, the highs and lows of competition, and the sheer beauty of drag art… it really did remind me just how captivating drag really is.

So, what are we waiting for, darlings? Time to unleash the fabulous pink tutu revolution! Pick one up, throw on some dazzling accessories (maybe a feathered boa, darling!), and get out there and show the world just how magnificent drag and a pink tutu can be!

Remember, it’s not about how much glitter you wear or how big your heels are. It's about celebrating yourself, embracing your inner fabulousness, and spreading a little bit of love and joy through the transformative power of drag.

Until next month, stay fabulous, and may your pink tutu always shimmer!

Love, Emma
