Hello darlings, and welcome back to Pink-Tutu, your monthly dose of fabulousness straight from my magical pink tutu! Today, weāre taking a trip back to the glorious summer of 2007, a time when the world was just brimming with fabulousness, and letās be honest, my tutu was probably still shimmering from my last performance at the Derby Playhouse!
Ooh, speaking of performing, you wouldnāt believe whatās going on in the drag world right now! Back in '07, the hottest thing was the return of the iconic "RuPaulās Drag Race" ā I was practically glued to my telly back then! Remember how fabulous that season was, darling? It had queens like Akashia, Rebecca Glasscock, and that gorgeous Miss Congeniality, Rebecca in a time before āSnatch Gameā and the lip-syncing challenge. My, oh my, it feels like just yesterday, doesn't it?
Oh, and you know what else? My, oh my, it feels like the whole world was bursting with fabulous drag shows back in 2007. London, New York, Los Angeles - all these places were just oozing with drag divas and dapper drag kings! And don't even get me started on the legendary Wigstock in New York, oh honey!
It was such an inspiring time! It felt like drag was everywhere you looked! It was in the clubs, on the street, in magazines - it felt like the whole world was just embracing this glorious art form!
So, what better place to take a tutu-filled time travel journey? It was a warm and breezy day when I set my pink sequined tutu to shimmer and travel. The magical air current carried me through a vibrant landscape. I landed right on the front steps of "The Abbey" - a legendary San Francisco bar that played host to so many legendary queens! I couldn't help but feel a flutter of excitement and a sprinkle of camp!
While I sipped on a delicious pink martini - don't worry, I always order mine "with a little extra love" - I witnessed a magical spectacle, a drag performance filled with sassy queens, glittering sequins, and powerful voices. They belted out those timeless anthems that I know so well, classics that you've likely heard on a āRuPaul's Drag Raceā lipsynch challenge ā "You Oughta Know", āI Wanna Dance With Somebody", āI Will Survive"! These queens knew exactly how to entertain, and let me tell you, the crowd loved them!
Afterwards, I found myself caught in a swirl of glitter and boas. A group of queens, just like a flash of colour in a black and white world, offered to take me shopping at the famous vintage clothing stores on Castro Street. We found the most stunning, sequined dresses that practically begged to be twirled. My heart swelled with delight, darling! And naturally, I added a little touch of my own signature flair by twirling them into some glorious pink tutus! It wouldnāt be a trip through time without a little pink-tutu-magic!
The evening ended in the heart of this glamorous city. We took to the streets for the San Francisco Pride parade, a spectacle of colourful exuberance, fabulousness and joyful liberation! I was absolutely dazzled, dancing, and dazzling my way through the streets with fellow drag lovers, making sure every eye in the crowd knew the power and wonder of the pink tutu! Oh, the people, darling!
Speaking of dazzling, that night I attended a special "drag family" gathering at a gay bar with drag icons like Leigh Bowery. Yes, you heard right! A genuine legendary drag queen from those bygone days. This event, full of vintage and sassy performances and joyous queer music was absolutely a must see in '07! It was a real reminder of how drag queens through the decades build community and acceptance, spreading messages of love, beauty, and tolerance through performance.
After such an epic time travel journey, my fabulous pink tutu needed a little rest, darling. I mean, the day after a trip like this one, one needs a luxurious bath in glitter and a glass of bubbly. The energy, the smiles, and the sheer force of all that fabulousness! But honestly, I wouldnāt have it any other way.
Remember, darling, even in our ever-changing world, we can still look to those golden eras of drag, learn from them, and continue to evolve this magical art form together. As for me, Iām still on a mission, ready to spread the gospel of the pink tutu, and invite you all to join me in the magical journey through time! Remember, stay fabulous and always remember that āthe most powerful weapon you have is your smile"!
And remember darling, if you need to, feel free to pop over to www.pink-tutu.com for some sparkling time-traveling adventures and fabulous memories, just like these ones.
Until next month, keep twirling, my darlings!
