Hello darlings!
Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, where we journey through time with a splash of glitter and a whole lot of pink! Itâs me, your gal Emma, back with another thrilling episode from my pink-tutu-powered time travels!
Post #1054 - Letâs twirl back to October 2007!
This month, I decided to jet (or should I say âtwirlâ?) back to the magical year of 2007. You know, back when âBohemian Rhapsodyâ was topping the charts, MySpace was a thing, and a certain social networking platform was still a fledgling baby. Oh, the memories!
But this wasnât about the music scene, or even the rise of the internet â no, my dear dears, this time, I was on a mission! My pink tutu had other plans, and it whisked me off to the most dazzling, exciting event â the annual Miss Gay USofA Pageant. Now, you might be thinking, âEmma, it's 2023, why are we focusing on a pageant from 2007?â Well, let me tell you, honey, this pageant wasnât just ANY pageant; it was groundbreaking!
This particular Miss Gay USofA wasn't just about crowns and sashes, it was about celebrating the diversity and uniqueness of the LGBTQIA+ community. Think radical drag with an attitude. Think bold statements, powerful performances, and the kind of queen who doesnât just strut the runway, she owns it! This was the first year the pageant had a trans woman compete, and it was a big deal. It felt like a step towards true representation. A glimmer of hope that all kinds of drag queens could find their place in the spotlight.
Speaking of spotlights, I spent the entire month hopping between glitz-and-glam drag balls to intimate basement dives, catching every show I could! There was Miss Gay Pennsylvania, a dazzling beauty who brought the house down with her musical talent. Miss Gay Iowa, a total comedic genius, cracking jokes left and right. Miss Gay West Virginia wowed everyone with her fierce dancing, making that stage her own. I loved watching the diverse range of styles on display, from the glitz and glamour to the quirky and alternative.
It reminded me that drag is so much more than just a performance - itâs a movement! Itâs about using our art, our humor, and our individuality to challenge expectations and break down barriers. We arenât just pretty faces and fabulous outfits â we are a force to be reckoned with!
And letâs not forget about the fashion, darlings! Think shimmering gowns, flamboyant feathers, and an abundance of sparkle that would put a disco ball to shame. I was completely enraptured by the outfits â from the elaborate showgirls to the street-style chic - they all screamed "Queen!" Of course, as a tutu enthusiast, I was completely swooning over all the feathered creations, the voluminous tulle skirts, and the playful poofs that filled every stage! It was a ballet of glamour and a total fashion extravaganza!
Of course, no time travel trip would be complete without a shopping spree! I landed a vintage silk top with the most divine embroidered flowers. A little bit retro, a whole lot chic! And, because every drag queen needs her accessories, I treated myself to a feather boa that would make a peacock jealous, and a pair of sequin-encrusted gloves that would put even a ballroom dancer to shame. My dear dears, this was truly drag shopping heaven!
October 2007 was an unforgettable journey. A melting pot of talent, a celebration of creativity, and a reminder that drag truly is a force to be reckoned with! So, until next time, keep twirling those tutus and never let anyone tell you you canât sparkle!
XOXO,
Emma
