Pink Tutu Time Travels: Episode 1053: September 2007 - A Glittering Trip Through the History of Drag!

Hello darlings, and welcome back to Pink Tutu Time Travels, the only blog on the internet that delivers you a dose of dazzling drag history alongside tips for getting the most fabulous pink tutu look. I'm your glamorous guide, Emma, a Derbyshire lass with a penchant for pink and a heart full of love for all things drag!

Now, grab a glass of something sparkling (or, like me, a cup of lukewarm tea - what can I say, I'm a girl who loves practicality!), because today we're time travelling to September 2007. Oh honey, what a glamorous era! It's the time when sequins and sass were truly blooming, the internet was slowly but surely catching onto the magical world of drag, and the scene was brimming with fresh faces ready to serve up fierce realness.

A Journey Back in Time:

With my sparkly pink tutu billowing behind me, I zoomed through the time vortex. Let's just say it was more like a glitter vortex, full of swirling iridescent sparkles! Thankfully, my signature pink tulle held fast! This month, I found myself smack bang in the middle of New York City.

Oh, how I adored that city back then. It was like the epicentre of drag energy! I strutted around Greenwich Village, dodging glamorous figures as they poured out of clubs and shows, buzzing with the thrill of the evening.

The very first thing that caught my eye was this show at The Stonewall Inn. Stonewall - the heart of the LGBT community - how could I possibly miss out? This show was legendary - a mixture of seasoned veterans and rising stars showcasing their talents for a packed house. I took in every detail of the glittering outfits, the hilarious comedy routines, and the pure artistry that emanated from the stage.

The Drag Scene: 2007

Back then, there were so many fantastic drag queens working their magic all around the globe, from the fiery lip syncing of Divine to the hilarious comedy queen Judy Tenuta. It was a time of amazing drag balls, where the creativity and passion for drag knew no bounds. Just imagine: fierce drag fashion shows, voguing battles, and judging panels with legends like RuPaul (even though the queen himself wouldn't really make his name known to the mainstream for a couple of years - can you believe that?!).

2007 was the year that the first ever RuPaul's Drag Race season started filming! This show revolutionized how the public saw drag. I still remember everyone I knew, and the drag queens I knew from Derbyshire, watching this show, captivated, wondering if any of us could be as amazing as these girls on the screen. I watched, utterly glued, inspired by the competition and the beautiful artistic freedom they showcased.

Tutus & Fashion

My favourite drag queen trend that year was, obviously, tutus. Now, these weren’t just any ordinary tutus - these were fashion statements. I'm talking giant pouffy tutus, some with neon accents, some with bold metallic designs, all taking a fresh approach to classic tutu style! Oh, and the heels - what can I say, heels were EVERYTHING! Whether platform wedges, killer stilettos, or sky-high sparkly shoes, they took drag style to the next level, especially for the queens who loved the more theatrically inspired look.

I think I actually fell head over heels (see what I did there?) for this whole trend because my magical pink tutu even allowed me to buy some amazing pieces from the vintage shop Love Saves The Day in Brooklyn. I'll let you in on a little secret – my little collection from this shop is absolutely my most treasured!

The Power of Drag

As I strutted back through the time vortex (my trusty pink tulle getting tangled with all the sparkle) and back to my Derbyshire haven, it made me think about the journey of drag, about how it evolved from underground bars and clubs to television screens, magazines, and even Broadway stages. I’m incredibly grateful to have experienced these glimpses of drag’s history and how much it's transformed throughout the years. It continues to inspire, empower, and redefine our perception of beauty and performance.

My Own Fashion Journey:

My trip to 2007 not only ignited my passion for fashion (it's not called Pink Tutu Time Travels for nothing!) but it gave me the spark I needed to make the perfect pink tutu. I always think it’s about so much more than the tutu itself. It's about using your own creativity, and your own fabulous style to make something that stands out and expresses who you are as a drag queen.

I even made it a mission for my own personal drag journey to try and convert every single one of my drag queen sisters to my beloved tutu look. (After all, who can resist a good dose of girly tulle goodness, right?)

Well, that’s all for this month, darling. It's time for me to retreat to my own little drag sanctuary here in Derbyshire and prepare for another thrilling voyage in time! Be sure to join me again next month as we travel to the glittering realms of drag history, but before you leave, I implore you, head on over to my www.pink-tutu.com website and share your favourite drag outfits and memories from the 2000s era! Until next time, keep sparkling, and always wear pink, dear! 💖
