Pink Tutu Time Travels: January 2009 - A Blast from the Past! (Blog Post #1069)

Hiya darlings! Emma here, your fabulous friend in time travelling pink tutus! Welcome back to my monthly delve into the dazzling history of drag, and as always, it's my absolute pleasure to share this journey with you! January 2009! Fancy a trip down memory lane, lovelies? Buckle up, buttercup, because we're about to take a trip back to the glittery, glamorous world of drag as it was almost fifteen years ago!

Time Travel Tales from Derbyshire

So, last night, I was practicing my pirouettes - you know, trying to get that extra-special twirl going! It's hard work keeping this time traveling tutu looking fabulous, don't you know! Anyway, while I was spinning and spinning, a magic sparkle flew from the frills and WHIZ! I found myself transported back to January 2009. It was bonkers, dears, truly bonkers!

Drag Scenes: January 2009

I popped into a London pub called the "Royal Vauxhall Tavern" - they still have some corking shows these days! This was just before RuPaul's Drag Race blew up the world, so I saw so many incredible Queens who haven't quite got that fame, but they were sensational, let me tell you. There was this Queen called "Divine" – oh, she was a true goddess of camp and humour. Such fabulous fashion and sass. Remember darling, back in 2009 drag queens still liked to get a little... let's say "close" with the audience! We're not talking full on lap dancing, no darling, it's more about being playfully outrageous. It's an art form, really!

Speaking of shows, there was also the legendary "The Birdcage" - a musical which ran for four years and became such a drag phenomenon. Oh my! Imagine: a comedy full of drag queens, feathers, glitz and glorious camp! This show is a big one in drag history. Think "Some Like It Hot" but with even more sequins!

Drag Fashion and the Pink Tutu

In terms of fashion, oh, it's so much fun looking back! We had everything, from super glam Hollywood styles, full on camp and of course, some seriously striking couture. Now, back then, the pink tutu hadn't really hit the drag scene big time, so it was my duty to showcase its sheer magnificence to the 2009 queens! You should have seen their eyes light up! I was like a shining, shimmering vision in the middle of the pub, radiating all things fabulous. They were convinced it was the new big trend! And who knows? Perhaps I was onto something…

The Importance of Drag History

But seriously darlings, looking back at the past is so important. It's all about appreciating the fabulous history of drag. It reminds us of the fearless Queens who paved the way, who broke barriers and helped define who we are today! Remember darling, every sparkly sequin, every flamboyant feather, every hair-raising wig is a reminder of where we came from, where we are and where we're headed.

*So, darlings, tell me, are you loving a good pink tutu as much as I do?
